OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION:
Studio Magazine offers perspectives on contemporary Canadian craft and design within global material culture. Published twice a year with an ongoing web presence, Studio is the Canadian platform for conversations and explorations about making: from historical and theoretical contexts for craft and design, to questions of materiality, community, and the place of makers in the world. Studio is published in Toronto by Craft Ontario.
OCAD University’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to announce a recruited placement in partnership with Studio Magazine for the role of Editorial Assistant. Working closely with the Managing Editor, the intern will get direct, practical experience with how a nationally distributed arts magazine comes together: editorial prep and copyediting, production administration, web publishing, and editorial planning. Some social media content creation is also part of the role.
This is a good fit for someone with an interest in arts writing, craft culture, or publishing who wants hands-on experience inside a small arts organization.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Editorial (approx. 50%)
- Copyediting articles for the FW 2026 print issue in line with Studio's house style
- Supporting the Managing Editor in preparing manuscripts for layout, including formatting and proofreading
- Participating in Studio editorial planning meetings
- Work with editorial team to take an article from pitch to draft
Production and Administration (approx. 25%)
- Learning the end-to-end production workflow for a print magazine issue
- Learn about image sourcing and copyright
- Assisting with editorial administration as needed (contributor correspondence, file organization)
Digital and Web (approx. 20%)
- Uploading articles to the Studio website and online archive
Social Media (approx. 5%)
- Contributing occasional content ideas or copy to support Studio's social channels
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; attention to detail, excellent organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and manage long and short-term projects according to print and program schedules
- Demonstrated experience with arts administration and logistics coordination are considered a major asset
- Demonstrated writing and editing skills related to contemporary art and culture is a major asset
- Awareness of or passion for contemporary art (especially craft) and related issues, ideas, communities and current happenings, is an asset
- Experience with arts publishing is an asset (magazine-related, journalistic, independent, zines, and/or peer-to-peer publishing/writing experience is welcomed)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, G Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite is an asset
RATE & TERM:
$24/hour, for 8 hours per week
Part-time contract, beginning late June 2026 to late June 2027
Exact start date to be determined with the selected candidate.
LOCATION:
Remote (Ontario-based preferred)
ELIGIBILITY:
- Active OCAD U undergraduate students in any discipline who have completed 15+ credits,
- or active OCAD U Master's students,
- or recent alumni (class of 2026, 2025).
