Kimathi Donkor: Curvaceous

Dr Kimathi Donkor’s new paintings, created in the inaugural UAL/OCADU artist’s residency exchange, use gesture and chance to play with representations of the helix structure of Afro-hair as a starting point for abstract meditations on freedom.

The finely twisting curls and coils which spring naturally from our heads can seem a perfect metaphor for how life, and the histories which document it, dances and spins from joy to pain and back again, never quite returning to the exact place we began. And such curvaceous forms also echo profound rhythms found throughout the universe, from the orbits of stars, planets and moons to the microscopic helix structure of DNA.

How does this natural world of sensual beauty survive, evade and overcome the kinds of rigid, straight, rectangular grids of control which seem to dominate cityscapes like Toronto, and much of the colonised prairies beyond? What forms of love can resist conformity to industrialised, monocultural power?
