Join us for the April edition of Research Talks, featuring Dr. Nithikul Nimkulrat.
In this talk - From Making to Knowing: Prototyping and the Production of Experiential Knowledge - Dr Nimkulrat examines how making becomes knowing through the practice of prototyping. Drawing on the edited volume Prototyping and Experiential Knowledge (2025), she explores how prototypes operate not merely as preliminary models, but as epistemic agents that actively produce experiential knowledge. Across diverse research fields, prototyping functions as a method of inquiry, a site of negotiation, and a means of articulating embodied and situated understanding. By synthesizing contributions from multiple disciplines, she argues that prototyping transforms material experimentation into a distinct form of knowledge production, reframing how research in art, design, and beyond understands the relationship between practice and epistemology.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Nithikul Nimkulrat is a textile artist, design researcher, and professor in the Faculty of Design, OCAD University. Her work advances experiential knowledge as a critical dimension of design research, integrating creative practice with scholarly inquiry. Focusing on materiality and craft as modes of thinking, she examines how making generates knowledge. She is Convener of the Design Research Society’s Special Interest Group on Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) and has shaped international conversations through authored and edited books, including Prototyping and Experiential Knowledge. Her textiles are exhibited internationally, and she has received the 2022–23 OCAD University’s Award for Distinguished Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity.
