清澈而真实: Pure and True
An exhibition by Yifan Wang
In revisiting the city of my youth, Beijing, in 2024 and 2026, I have noticed the inconspicuous reappearance of Arabic signs that had at one point, prominently lined halal butcher shops in the Hui neighbourhood, but subsequently gradually had been erased from public view. As a member of the Hui ethnic minority, I found that the discrepancies between my childhood memories and current Islamic representation unsettled my perceptions, prompting me to observe and document these changes. This exhibition invites viewers to the places where I grew up, to wander through a morning market, mosques, public and private spaces, witnessing what has been lost, what remains, and what continues to exist beneath the surface.
