Aling (Miss/Mrs) by Abby Tibon. Oil and acrylic on canvas. 36” x 24”.

Leading up to the opening of the annual Mabuhay Philippines Festival in Nathan Phillips Square (Aug. 23 to 24), OCAD U is presenting an exhibition featuring work by Filipino OCAD U students and alumni in the lobby of City Hall from Aug. 18 to 21.

The exhibition is titled Bayanihan, the Tagalog term for cooperation and communal unity. It derives from the word ‘bayan’ which can mean nation, town or community. "Bayanihan" can manifest itself in many forms, but most often refers to the old Filipino tradition in which neighbours would aid each other in relocating by picking up an entire house using bamboo poles.

This spirit lives on in Bayanihan: a gathering of talented Filipino artists united under one roof to celebrate their creativity, culture, and shared experiences even as they’ve carried their home across the ocean to Canada.

The exhibition is curated by Jewel Pavao and Kristina Pavao.

Featured artists are:
