A public panel bringing together artists and curators from Toronto and Gwangju to explore contemporary artistic practice, cultural exchange, and international collaboration. The discussion examines how artworks, ideas, and communities are shaped across different cultural and geographic contexts.
How do artworks, ideas, and relationships transform as they move across cultures and continents?
We are excited to invite you to Art in Context: Connecting Toronto to Gwangju, a public panel discussion exploring contemporary artistic and curatorial practices across Canada and South Korea.
Moderated by Julia Rose Sutherland, Associate Professor and MAAD Program Chair, the conversation will bring together Ryan Rice, Executive Director of Onsite Gallery, and Sun Lee, Chief Curator at the LEEKANGHA Art Museum in Gwangju, alongside artists Seol-a Kim and Saewoong Ju.
Moderated by Julia Rose Sutherland, Associate Professor and MAAD Program Chair, the conversation will bring together Ryan Rice, curator of the Canada Pavilion at the 2026 Gwangju Biennale, Skennen'kó:wa ken? (Do You Carry Great Peace?), and Sun Lee, Chief Curator at the LEEKANGHA Art Museum and curator of the Tomorrow’s Memories, Mudeung’s Aurora exhibition at Toronto’s 401 Richmond, alongside visiting artists Seol-a Kim and Saewoong Ju.
Drawing connections between exhibitions taking place in Toronto and Gwangju, the panel will explore how artists and curators engage with place, history, community, and cultural exchange. Speakers will reflect on the opportunities and challenges of working across different cultural contexts, and discuss how artworks, ideas, and relationships evolve as they move across borders.
