The OCAD U community is saddened to learn of the passing of Edward Kim Snyder, a respected Kingston-based artist and graduate of the Ontario College of Art (OCA), on January 24, 2026, at the age of 70 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Kingston, Snyder was considered a visionary who studied art at OCA and design at Sheridan School of Design. His designs won international and national awards, including the De Beers International Award, the One of a Kind Award and, most recently, the Award of Excellence by the Royal Canadian Regiment for the memorial sculpture he created, which honoured Canadian soldiers who had lost their lives in Afghanistan. He also designed the new Chain of Office for the Mayor of Kingston in 1998.

According to a tribute posted on Facebook by his wife Ruhi, Snyder was an exceptionally talented goldsmith with extraordinary imagination whose designs were often inspired by nature and forms of life, and brought joy to many across the globe. His brilliant intellect crossed genres and disciplines. He was known as a thoughtful, kind, generous, curious and empathic human who touched many lives.

OCAD U extends its sincere condolences to Snyder’s family, including his wife Ruhi and children, friends and neighbours.

A celebration of life for family, friends, neighbours and community will take place at a later time this year.
