OCAD University is recognizing long-time supporter and former Board of Governors Vice-Chair David Binet, whose philanthropy to the University has now surpassed $1 million. This milestone reflects his most recent $700,000 gift to establish the David Binet Design Leadership Fund and his contribution of $300,000 towards the revitalization of Butterfield Park. The David Binet Design Leadership Fund is a major initiative that will strengthen the University’s role in design, foresight and innovation while continuing his legacy of support for students, faculty and the broader creative community.

“We are deeply grateful to David for his extraordinary generosity and steadfast belief in OCAD U,” said Ana Serrano, OCAD U President and Vice-Chancellor. “Through his continued support, David is helping our students and faculty imagine new possibilities, drive innovation and make a lasting impact far beyond our campus.”

This latest gift builds on David’s years of championing OCAD U’s vision. His contributions have supported both the University’s immediate needs and long-term aspirations, including DemocracyXChange, scholarships, awards, bursaries and emergency student financial aid. He is also recognized for his leadership support of art and educational institutions across the country, such as the Art Gallery of Ontario, McGill University, the National Ballet of Canada and Canada’s National Ballet School.

Investing in the future of design and innovation

The David Binet Design Leadership Fund will build on the strengths of OCAD U’s Master of Design in Strategic Foresight and Innovation (SFI) program. It will support student scholarships, innovative research, student and faculty participation at key international conferences, as well as the enhancement of our digital platforms through the creation of an SFI web portal and a new design leadership speaker series. The series will bring some of the world’s most influential voices in design and strategic innovation to the University.

By fostering research and global collaboration, the fund will create new opportunities for students and faculty to share their work internationally, amplify thought leadership in the design community and further strengthen OCAD U’s reputation as a global centre for creativity and innovation.

“I believe in the power of design thinking and strategic foresight to address the challenges of our time,” said David. “OCAD U’s renowned SFI program develops leaders who will have a meaningful impact in Canada and beyond. I’m honoured to be part of that journey.”

“It’s a truly inspiring gift,” said Suzanne Stein, Associate Professor, Faculty of Arts and Science and Director, Super Ordinary Lab. “David’s support will fast-track our ability to connect our students with world-class leaders, expand our research and strengthen our role in shaping the future.”
