Jana Macalik is the Director of the Global Centre for Climate Action at OCAD University in Toronto. A seasoned academic leader, she has played a transformative role at OCAD U since 2014, where she has served as Associate Dean, Research, Outreach and Strategic Projects (2014–2019), Associate Dean, Academic Affairs in the Faculty of Design (2018–2020), and Acting Associate Dean, Academic Affairs (2021–2022) and Acting Dean (2022 - 2023) in the Faculty of Art In each role, she has helped to shape institutional priorities in curriculum innovation, faculty development, interdisciplinary research, and community-engaged practices.

From 2023 to 2025, Jana was seconded to NSCAD University in Halifax, where she served first as Interim Provost and Vice-President (Academic & Research), and later as Interim President. During her tenure, she guided institutional reforms aligned with provincial legislation, championed equity-focused academic renewal, and stewarded NSCAD’s national and international research partnerships.

Jana brings over 25 years of experience in design practice and higher education. Her creative work spans cultural exhibition design, branding, and spatial storytelling, with projects for institutions across North America including Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership (New York), Perennial Inc. (Toronto), and Aldrich Pears Associates (Vancouver). She continues to explore “discursive spaces”—hybrid environments that challenge binary thinking, material boundaries, and social divisions—as part of her design ethos and pedagogical approach.

As an Associate Professor, Jana is committed to nurturing interdisciplinary creative thinkers and fostering learning environments that reflect complexity, equity, and imagination. She is NCIDQ-certified, LEED ID+C accredited, and currently serves on the editorial board of Curator: The Museum Journal.

She is also a doctoral candidate in Higher Education at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), where her research examines the tension between system-level differentiation policies and the unique pedagogical models of art and design universities in Canada. Her scholarship addresses the challenges these institutions face in maintaining studio-based learning in an increasingly metrics-driven postsecondary landscape.

Jana holds a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies from Dalhousie University. Before joining OCAD U, she was a tenured faculty member in the School of Interior Design at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her work continues to bridge creative practice, academic leadership, and systems thinking in service of more just and imaginative futures.
