Graduate School Fair

At California Institute of the Arts, we don't train students to become artists. That may sound like a contrarian message for one of the country's leading visual and performing arts colleges, so we'll clarify: Those who are accepted into our rigorous programs are already artists. Our faculty work with students to hone their skills in an open environment, experiment with new approaches to their work, and critically engage with the rest of the CalArts community as well as the world beyond their studios.

Whether you choose the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or the Master of Design (MDes), our programs offer a dynamic and critique-based environment where your creative vision will flourish.

The MFA program empowers you to push the boundaries of contemporary art production and critical inquiry, with options for full-residency or low-residency pathways, including the new Low Residency MFA: Critical Ecological Practices cohort.

The MDes program offers two distinct pathways, providing advanced research and practice in information design, systems design, interaction design and much more.

All graduate students develop a master's thesis project and participate in research seminars, studio classes, public exhibitions, presentations, lectures and studio visits by renowned creative professionals.

NSCAD University offers three graduate studies programs -the Master of Arts in Art Education (MAAE), Master of Design (MDes) and the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) that are built with an engaging and hands-on approach, providing students with the proficiency necessary to take their place in the creative economy.

These graduate degree programs are ideal for individuals who have gained sufficient experience in their own area of interest to make concentrated post-graduate study a useful choice. In some cases, the graduate programs provide, through teaching assistantships, direct contact between graduate and undergraduate students. NSCAD's 36 and 60 credit graduate programs are two years in duration for full-time students and may be completed part-time.

If you answered "yes," then you may be looking for the Master of Science in Biomedical Communications. The MScBMC program blends science, art, and technology to help you create powerful visuals-like illustrations, animations, and interactive experiences-to make complex medical and scientific ideas clear and engaging.

Graduates work as medical and scientific illustrators, animators, UX designers, educators, and researchers in sectors such as pharma and biotech, medical advertising, patient education, public health, medical-legal, and service design.
