YVONNE MCKAGUE HOUSSER (1897-1996)

Yvonne McKague Housser shaped Canadians’ vision of life in Northern Ontario mining towns through her vivid paintings. An Ontario College of Art (OCA, now OCAD University) alum and later an instructor there, Housser spent more than two decades encouraging students to develop their own creative voices.

At OCA, she became a respected and popular instructor, working under Group of Seven artist Arthur Lismer.¹ Her influence extended well beyond the classroom through a lifelong commitment to art education and the advancement of Canadian artists.

Closely associated with the Group of Seven, Housser developed a distinctive artistic practice rooted in Canada's landscapes while continually embracing new ideas and techniques. Her early paintings captured the character of Northern Ontario communities with bold colour and expressive forms. She became known for portraying mining towns such as Cobalt, Ontario, with warmth, bold colour and a distinctive sense of character. Her willingness to experiment reflected her commitment to lifelong learning and her belief that artists should remain responsive to a changing world while remaining true to their individual vision.²

As an educator, Housser championed accessible arts education for students of all ages. In addition to teaching at OCA, she played an instrumental role in the founding of Toronto's Art Students' League and later taught at other post-secondary institutions, helping expand opportunities for artistic learning across Ontario.

Housser was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters and the Federation of Canadian Artists, organizations that supported the growth of a distinctly Canadian artistic identity. Her paintings, now held in major public collections across the country, continue to inspire audiences with their originality and sense of place.
