BARBARA ASTMAN

OCAD U Professor Emerita Barbara Astman, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (OCA, now OCAD University) and a longtime faculty member at OCAD U, is among a generation of visionary artists who have transformed visual culture since the early 1970s by expanding the possibilities of photography and image and defining new ways of seeing.

For more than four decades, Astman has explored a wide range of photo-based media, creating innovative works that have received national and international recognition. Her practice has challenged conventional approaches to photography, blending personal narratives, experimentation and new technologies to redefine how images communicate meaning.

As an educator, Astman has inspired generations of emerging artists. She taught at OCAD U for more than four decades, from 1975 to 2021, serving as chair of the Photography program from 2001 to 2002 and as a professor in the Faculty of Art from 2001 to 2021.

Astman’s work is held in major public, corporate and private collections, including the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto, Deutsche Bank in New York City and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England. 

Deeply engaged in Toronto’s arts community, Astman has contributed her expertise through numerous boards and advisory committees, including the AGO Board of Trustees (2009–2013). 

In 2024, Astman was recognized with the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Art, one of Canada’s highest honours for artistic achievement.
