OCAD University recently presented the inaugural Chancellor’s Lifetime Achievement Award to Rosalie Sharp, a prominent arts advocate, honorary doctorate recipient, gifted artist, esteemed benefactor and the University’s first chancellor.

The award, presented by OCAD U's Chancellor Jaime Watt, on Oct. 20, recognizes Sharp’s extraordinary contributions to the advancement of art, design and culture in Toronto and across Canada.

The intimate celebration brought together members of the Sharp family, OCAD U leaders, past presidents and close friends to honour Sharp’s lifelong dedication to creativity, philanthropy and civic engagement.

Established in 2025, the Chancellor’s Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates individuals whose philanthropy, leadership and foresight have left a lasting mark on the University and city.

The award recognizes those whose generosity extends beyond financial support to include mentorship, advocacy and a steadfast commitment to enriching the cultural life of their communities.

“Rosalie’s story is, in so many ways, the story of OCAD University itself — one of vision, determination, and a boundless belief in the transformative power of art and design,” said Chancellor Jaime Watt. “She has set the gold standard for what it means to serve — and to give.”

As a distinguished and proud alum of the Ontario College of Art (OCA, now OCAD U), Sharp graduated from the Material Arts program in 1969, receiving the prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Medal in recognition of her outstanding achievements.

In 2004, she returned to her alma mater as the University’s first chancellor, where she played a defining role in guiding OCAD U through a period of significant transformation and growth.

Alongside her husband, Isadore Sharp, founder and chairman of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Sharp has been one of OCAD U’s most passionate and enduring champions.

Their philanthropic leadership has profoundly shaped the University’s physical and creative landscape, including the generous support of the construction of the Rosalie Sharp Centre for Design, the main campus building that is a Toronto architectural landmark, as well as the Rosalie Sharp Pavilion, a vibrant centre for experiential learning and community engagement.

During the evening, guests were treated to a retrospective video presentation, which highlighted Sharp’s creative journey, her impact as a philanthropist and talented artist and her profound influence on the OCAD U community.

“Rosalie is a visionary whose creativity and conviction have left an indelible mark on our institution and our city,” said Ana Serrano, president and vice-chancellor of OCAD University. “Her belief in the transformative power of art and design has helped generations of artists and designers find their voice and purpose.”

To commemorate the occasion, Sharp was presented with a finely crafted sculptural award by OCAD U alum Gabriel George (2025, Sculpture/Installation).

Guided by her passion and generous spirit, Sharp has helped shape the creative identity of OCAD U and has inspired generations to follow in her footsteps. Her legacy will continue to guide and uplift the OCAD U community for years to come.
