The OCAD U community is mourning the loss of artist, illustrator, graphic designer and educator Greg Mably, who passed away on Feb. 24. Mably, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University), has been an instructor in OCAD U’s Illustration program for more than 20 years.

A versatile instructor who taught across all year levels, Mably was known for his keen eye, soft-spoken manner and impeccable taste. Former students and colleagues recall his gentle humour and unwavering mentorship.

In his art, Mably moved between abstract and figurative subjects, working primarily in digital media, combining vivid colour and geometric forms. His work appeared in numerous publications, and his clients included corporations and institutions such as The New York Times, ESPN and Microsoft.

“Greg is the only person in my world whom I would show my sketches to get his input. Nobody else. He was critically frank, offered brilliant suggestions, constantly encouraging and was always right,” wrote Professor Gary Taxali in a moving tribute posted to Instagram. Taxali was a close friend of Mably.

Associate Professor and Chair of Illustration Shea Chang, in a message to the OCAD U Illustration community, mourned the loss of a former teacher, valued colleague and friend of more than two decades.

OCAD U extends its sincere condolences to Mably’s family, friends, colleagues and students.
