Jody Hewgill is an award-winning illustrator and artist. Hewgill’s clients include The Criterion Collection, The New York Times, National Geographic, Rolling Stone, Time, among others. Her diverse illustration projects range from being featured on the cover of TIME magazine, projected on a NYC Broadway Theatre marquee, animated for the Cincinnati Opera, and to being adapted for Google Hangouts, Russia. Eight of her posters created for Arena Stage were selected for The Permanent Poster Collection, The Library of Congress, Washington, DC.
Hewgill has garnered numerous international awards, most notably, Best of Show (Joseph Morgan Henniger Award) Society of Illustrators of LA; 3 Gold and 4 Silver Medals from The Society of Illustrators, NY; Gold Award, Spectrum: the Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art; Gold Medal, Graphis Design Annual; and Gold Medal from the Advertising & Design Club of Canada (A&DCC). Awards and recognition include American Illustration; Communication Arts Illustration Annual; the Society of Illustrators, NY; the New York Art Directors Club; the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles; The Society of Publication Designers; Graphis; The National Magazine Awards, 3x3 magazine; Applied Arts Awards Annual; the Advertising & Design Club of Canada (A&DCC); and Print Regional Design Annual.
Hewgill’s detailed acrylic paintings have been featured in several publications and media, including, New Acrylics Essential Sourcebook; Taschen’s The Illustrator: 100 Best from Around the World; and Rolling Stone’s The Illustrated Portraits. A selection of paintings from her 2023 solo exhibition Novel Companions were featured in the curated section of Create! Magazine issue #40. Additionally, her illustration practice has been feature-articled in Communication Arts and 3x3 Magazine.
Hewgill’s paintings have been exhibited internationally, including at Philippe Labaune Gallery, NYC; The Lyceum Gallery, Toronto; Robert Berman Gallery, Santa Monica; La Luz de Jesus Gallery, LA; Nucleus Gallery, Alhambra; Museo Nazionale Etrusco, Rome; Enid Lawson Gallery, London; Japanese American National Museum, LA; and Art Now Fair, Miami, among others.
She has given lectures on her illustration practice at Syracuse University, School of Art; Rhode Island School of Design; University of Arts; Art Center College of Design; Maryland Institute College of Arts; Fashion Institute of Technology, and Sheridan College.
Jody Hewgill is currently an Associate Professor in the Illustration program. She began teaching as a sessional instructor at OCAD U in 2008.
