Tuition and Fees

DOMESTIC & INTERNATIONAL

Fees are charged at either the domestic or international rate. The domestic tuition rate applies to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their dependents as well as exempted international students. The international tuition rate applies to all other students. These fees are subject to change, all tuition fees are reviewed and approved annually by the Board of Governors.

Canadian Federation of Students (“CFS”)This fee provides membership to the Canadian Federation of Students, Canada’s largest post-secondary student organization. The benefits include national and provincial advocacy on issues impacting students; access to the International Student Identity Card free of charge; access to skill-building workshops and training; support for the Circle of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Students; and more.

Membership Fee
Orientation Fee (new students only)This fee is to support a series of transition programs when you first start your studies in OCAD. This is a one-time fee charged to new incoming students only. To find out more, please visit Orientation.Academic Support
Health and Dental Plan FeeAll full time students (1.5 credits or more; Graduate Studies full-time program) are enrolled with the University’s Health and Dental Plan offered by StudentCare. University Health Insurance Plan (“UHIP”)International students in Ontario are required to participate in the University Health Insurance Plan. Per Fall and Winter Term

  • Students in the Laptop Program pay fees on an annual basis for software and support.
  • Laptop fees are specific to your program and year of entry. The mandatory fees are charged automatically upon registration.
  • Laptop Fees appear under the "Laptop Fees" tab on the Student Finance account activity.
  • Fees are charged in the Fall and Winter Semesters. No fees are charged in Summer. Students who only enrol in one semester pay once only.

What's Included in the Fees?

  • Approximately 50-68% of the fee is for software licensing. This includes Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office and Windows licensing Lynda.com. Variations in the fee account for per program software.
  • Approximately 30% of the fee is for support. This is for staff support at the IT Services Help Desk, Loaner Laptops (in case yours breaks), dongles, power adapters and other hardware required to support our service.
  • The remainder is for Print Credits and which is applied to your Print Account. *Note: Print Credits were reduced to 50% for Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 due to campus closure. Laptop Program fee rates have been adjusted accordingly.

Fee levels vary by admit year to account for students who have already paid one-time fees for perpetual licenses of software.

Fees are subject to change on an annual basis and approval by Senate and the Board of Governors.

Production materials fees cover the costs of materials consumed and/or incorporated in the making of student work in the shops and studios at OCAD U. They cover the cost of consumable materials that support students’ studio production - items that are used up in the making of student work within the studio.

Examples of consumable materials are glue, gas, nails, screws, sandpaper, sanding discs, saw blades, inks, glazes, solvents, bulbs, batteries, small hand tools, replacement parts and equipment.

These fees are automatically added to a student’s financial account at the time of course registration. Production materials fees are non-refundable after the last day to drop courses with a 100% refund, as outlined in the Calendar.

Please note some first-year courses delivered in dedicated studios carry a fee related to relevant program area. First year courses with production materials fees attached are noted in the course calendar.

Payments

Payment must be received in full by the payment deadline for each term. Students are expected to monitor their student finance account through the myOCADU student portal. Financial invoices will be available on the myOCADU student portal after a student registers for the term. All finance correspondences will be emailed to the student’s OCADU email account.

Non-receipt of an OCADU email notice does not exempt you from meeting your financial obligations.

Late payment of fees

Your fees must be paid in full by the payment due dates. Otherwise, students may be placed on financial hold, and charged an interest penalty. The financial hold will be removed when the outstanding balance, including penalties, is paid in full.

Paying Tuition

Payment Options:

Make a bill payment through your Canadian banking institution online/telephone banking or in-person at the bank teller. Search and add “Ontario College of Art & Design or OCAD University” as a bill payment payee and use your seven digit student ID number as your account number.

Bill payments made through the bank will take 2 - 5 business days to show up on your fees account. Please allow sufficient time between your bill payment and payment deadlines to ensure your payment is received and credited to your account.

Online chargeback policy is applicable to all bill payments.  More details regarding the online chargeback policy can be found under the Policies section.

Convera (formerly WU GlobalPay) is one of the two authorized international payment vendors available for international students to pay their admission deposit and tuition fee payment. Using the Convera platform you can arrange to pay online on your own time and in your own currency. There are no transaction fees, and exchange rates are favorable compared to banks. After applying, students have 72 hours to make the payment at their bank to be guaranteed the quote given.

Payments may take 3 - 5 business days to arrive. Please allow sufficient time between your payment and payment deadlines for funds to arrive.

Online chargeback policy is applicable to all Convera payments.  More details regarding the online chargeback policy can be found under the Policies section.

How to use Convera

PayMyTuition is one of the two authorized international payment vendors available for international students to pay their admission deposit and tuition fee payment.. Using the PayMyTuition platform, you can pay your tuition payments from any bank, in any country, in any currency at better than bank exchange rates. PayMyTuition is fast, simple and cost effective.

Payments may take up 3 - 5 business days to arrive. Please allow sufficient time between your payment and payment deadlines for funds to arrive.

Online chargeback policy is applicable to all PayMyTuition payments.  More details regarding the online chargeback policy can be found under the Policies section. 

How to use PayMyTuition

Students are encouraged to use an electronic payment method where possible. Couriered cheques may take longer to arrive and post to your student finance account.

Please include your full name and student ID number with all correspondence. Post-dated cheques are not accepted. There is a charge of $30 for each NSF (non-sufficient funds) or returned cheque.

Students are encouraged to use an electronic payment method where possible and during non office hours.

Other Payment Options:

OCAD U now accepts Higher Ed Points, which means you can convert your TD or Aeroplan points into $250 worth of credits towards your tuition fees. Visit HigherEdPoints.com for information about how to join, redeem points, and transfer the credits to OCAD University.

Short term payment plans are available for students to pay for their tuition fees in installments for the current term. Students are encouraged to visit the Financial Aid & Awards office prior to meeting with the Finance Department for a payment plan.

If you are a sponsored student, and your fees are being paid in full by your sponsor, you can use one of the above payment methods to pay your fees OR you can request a deferment until your sponsorship payment is received by emailing a letter of sponsorship to the Student Accounts Clerk, studentaccounts@ocadu.ca before the payment deadline. Sponsors are invoiced on a term-basis after registration deadlines have passed for the applicable term. Students are expected to monitor their fees account to ensure payment has been made by their sponsor.

Sponsors are encouraged to pay their student's fees by EFT instead of couriered cheques for faster payment processing.  Please reach out to Student Accounts at studentaccounts@ocadu.ca for more information.

If you are receiving external third-party scholarships and/or bursaries that is not administered through OCAD University, and the scholarships and/or bursaries pay OCAD University directly, please forward payment(s) and award letter to:

Policies

Interest

Overdue accounts are subject to late payment interest charges as described:

  • Late fees of 1.25% compounded monthly (16.08% effective annual rate) will be charged on outstanding tuition fee balances, beginning the first of the month after the applicable term payment due date.
  • Daily interest will be assessed for each day that your payment is late. Interest will continue to accrue on unpaid daily balances and be charged on a monthly basis.
  • Interest charges will appear on your student account on the first day of the month following the interest assessment. Example: October's interest charges will be assessed and show up on your account on November 1st.
  • Interest charge accrual stops when the academic year ends.
  • If you are making your payment through your bank, please allow sufficient time of 2-3 business days ahead of the deadline to ensure that your payment is received and credited to your account.

A student will be placed on financial hold as a result of outstanding fees, including tuition and student fees, AV, Studio and library fines. The financial hold will be removed when the outstanding balance, including penalties, is paid in full.

Students who have AV, Studio and/or library fines hold should contact cashier@ocadu.ca to arrange for payment. For all other enquiries regarding the fine(s), please contact the respective department for assistance.

Payment Options

Things that don’t happen when you are on financial hold

  • You will not be automatically dropped from your courses
  • Your professors will not be notified

Students that have not paid their fees in full and are restricted from their fees account and would like to drop and/or withdraw from registered course(s), please visit the Office of the Registrar for further assistance. Also, please make note of any withdrawal or refund dates.

OCAD University will not permit registration, release transcripts or process graduation assessments until all outstanding fees are cleared.

If there is a credit balance on your account after all fees and charges are paid and cleared for the previous or current academic terms, 

  • You may leave the funds on your account.
  • You may request for a refund for a credit balance over $10 prior to the end date of the current academic term.

Note: Credit transfers will be processed automatically if a student is registered for a current or future term to offset the debit balance owing for the term. The student is not required to request a past term credit balance to be transferred to a current or future term debit balance. Credit term transfers are usually processed before the current term payment deadline. Eligible credit balance for refund will exclude any ‘Anticipated’ amount as displayed on your student account/tuition statement(s).

Students may request a refund between the following dates. If no request is made, the credit balance will be applied to the next term.

Please note that the $500 admission deposit for first year students is non-refundable.

If you drop course(s) or withdraw from your program,

  • Ensure that all course changes are completed before requesting a refund.
  • If you have outstanding OSAP loans, OCAD University is required by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to send some or all of the credit balance remaining on your account first to the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) to be applied against your outstanding student loan balance. Any remaining credit balance will then be refunded to you. You may check your refund amount to the NSLSC by logging into your CanLearn student account at www.canlearn.ca.

If you receive a scholarship, award or bursary, you may be entitled to a refund if the funds received exceed the fees and charges on your account. If you drop course(s) or withdraw from your program, some or all of your scholarship, award or bursary may be reversed. Refund will be first applied to any financial aid & award program from which you received the funds. Please contact Financial Aid & Awards Office at FinancialA@ocadu.ca for more information.

REFUND SCHEDULE

You may withdraw from course(s) anytime up until the final deadline published in Dates and Deadlines. A partial refund may be granted for withdrawals early in the term. See the applicable Refund Withdrawal Schedule for details.

To withdraw from a course, you must drop it from your course schedule in myOCADU Records by the published deadlines (using the 'drop' button). Non-attendance does not constitute notice of withdrawal, nor does notifying your faculty or administrative staff.

To withdraw from a course, you must drop it from your course schedule in myOCADU Records by the published deadlines (using the 'drop' button). Non-attendance does not constitute notice of withdrawal, nor does notifying your faculty or administrative staff.

2023 Spring/Summer Refund Withdrawal Schedule

There is a charge of $30 for each NSF (non-sufficient funds) or returned cheque. This charge will be added to your student finance account. No more personal cheques will be accepted in the future.

When a financial institution or payment processor notifies OCAD U of a chargeback request, the University will investigate each request. If the charges are deemed valid, the University takes the necessary steps to dispute the chargeback. The student will receive an email from the University regarding the nature of the chargeback and providing guidance on the proper procedure for requesting refunds.

In the event that it is determined that a student has misused the chargeback process, appropriate measures will be taken by the University. The student is no longer allowed to use the same method of payment indefinitely for any tuition, deposit, and miscellaneous payments. To ensure clarity, a restriction will be placed on the student's account, clearly indicating the nature of the restriction and its duration.

Students may apply for a short-term payment plan if they would like to pay in installments without late penalties or is unable to meet the term tuition fee payment deadline and would like to defer their payment within that current term.

Eligibility

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate studies program with active registration and fees assessed for the term(s) covered by the payment plan.
  • Payment plan can only be set up for the current term in which you are registered. Plans for retroactive terms are not permitted.
  • Must be in good financial standing with OCAD University and all past due balances are paid from the previous terms.
  • Receiving income from an approved funding source recognized by OCAD University that is equal or greater than your total fee assessment.
