ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All offers of admission to OCAD University are based on the strength of the applicant’s portfolio but are conditional upon meeting the minimum academic requirements and supplying all required documentation.
Official transcripts and supporting documents should be mailed to Admissions & Recruitment at OCAD University's main address.
The following academic requirements must be met to complete the admission process.
Academic Requirements
For Ontario Secondary School applicants:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma, (OSSD)
- Six Grade 12 U or M courses with a minimum overall academic average of 70%
- Grade 12 U English (ENG4U or EAE4U) with a minimum final grade of 70%.
Please note: if your first language is not English and you have not completed at least four full years of high school in a Ministry approved Ontario school system you are also required to submit successful TOEFL (or equivalent test) results in addition to ENG4U.
For Canadian high school applicants outside Ontario:
Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma with a minimum overall academic average of B or 70% numeric equivalent in the final year including a Grade 12 English with a minimum of 70%. Detailed information can be found here, Academic Requirements by Province.
Please note: if your first language is not English and you have not completed at least four full years of high school in a Canadian School system you are required to submit successful TOEFL (or equivalent test) results in addition to Grade 12 English (or equivalent).
For international high school applicants:
Secondary School Graduation equivalent to Grade 12 in Ontario with an overall average of B or 70% numeric equivalent in the final year and:
- If you are applying from a county or school system with English as the official language of instruction, a minimum grade of B or 70% numeric equivalent in English 12 or equivalent course is required.
- If you are applying from a country or school system with a language other than English as the official language of instruction, OR if your first language is not English and you have not completed at least four full years of high school in an English school system, you are required to present the successful results of TOEFL (or equivalent test).
All international students must have a valid Study Permit/Student Visa before registering at OCAD U. We strongly recommend that you apply for your study permit as soon as the offer of admission is received.
We are currently in the process of reviewing our policies for international secondary school requirements. More information will be made available as soon as possible.
OCAD University does not grant advanced credit for the International Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement courses/credits.
For mature applicants:
A mature applicant is at least 21 years of age by September 1 of the year of intended enrollment. All applicants, including Canadian citizens, must provide proof of proficiency in English.
Please note: If your first language is not English, and you have resided or studied less than four years in a country or school system where the official language is English, you are required to submit the successful results of TOEFL (or equivalent test).
For Advanced Standing:
OCAD U offers a limited number of spaces for students with Advanced Standing through Prior Learning Assessment. You are eligible to apply if you have at least one year of post-secondary visual art or design education that is the equivalent of OCAD U’s first year. Original transcripts, a statement of intent and proof of proficiency in English is required. Your acceptance and year level placement is dependent on an assessment of your portfolio, which happens during OCAD U's study week in February. Successful applicants who do not qualify for Advanced Standing but have successfully completed courses at an accredited post-secondary institution may be eligible for Transfer of Credit.
Transfer of Credit:
All successful applicants with previous post secondary education are encouraged to apply for transfer of credit. Detailed information can be found in Prior Learning Assessment.

For those interested in our Faculty of Art programs, OCAD U currently has Articulation Agreements with the following post-secondary institutions:
Yukon School of Visual Arts (first-year program)
Fleming College (Visual and Creative Arts Diploma - VCAD)
Georgian College (Fine Art - Advanced Diploma Program)
