The Journal of Visual & Critical Studies (JVCS) collects and celebrates some of the best undergraduate academic writing at OCAD University.

Comprising critical essays, exhibition reviews, artist portfolios, creative non-fiction, and thesis abstracts from students across all disciplines, this annual publication reflects the unique approaches to art history and visual culture that are being undertaken here. We value and emphasize interdisciplinary research methods and modes of thinking to provide diverse perspectives.

The JVCS welcomes new editorial committee members every year, offering students the opportunity to help sustain the publication through peer-to-peer education about the publishing process.

ABOUT JVCS:
The Journal of Visual & Critical Studies (JVCS) is a student-driven publication dedicated to sharing compelling academic writing at OCAD U. Since 2016, we have published annual anthologies of critical essays, exhibition reviews and thesis abstracts that we believe push the boundaries of writing on art history and visual culture. The JVCS’ editorial committee comprises undergraduate students across all programs. The committee undertakes the editing, promotion, and publication of the Journal. This collaborative process, supported by faculty advisors, allows members to hone their knowledge of the publication process and build long-lasting connections at OCAD U and beyond. The mentorship program through which the Journal is produced ensures its continuity as a long-term publication. The Journal of Visual & Critical Studies champions peer collaboration and community building amongst writers, researchers, curators, artists and designers. We are excited to provide a platform for student
voices and unique critical writing in the years to come.
