Creative Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Artists and Designers

Are you curious how entrepreneurship applies to artists and designers?

Are you an aspiring founder? Independent studio artist? Freelancer? Member of a small collective?

These three workshops will help you understand how to start your creative business. Light refreshments will be provided. All sessions will take place at the CEAD, level 3, 115 McCaul Street.

From Idea to Action - Wed. Feb. 19, 1-6PM

How do you take your thesis project to the next level? Start a studio practice? Launch your own DIY space? Run an art collective?

Bring an idea, whether it is a business concept, ongoing project or dream, and map out how you can turn that idea into reality.

 

Making Connections - Thurs. Feb. 20, 1-6PM

How do you build connections and foster a creative community?

Through two panels of speakers, demystify the process of making connections from building your network of collaborators and mentors, to finding your audience, customers and clients. Please stay tuned for our announcement of panelists.

Business 101 - Fri. Feb. 21, 1-6PM

What business skills do I need as an artist or designer?

Understand the practical basics of being self-employed: legal business structures, taxes, contracts, and intellectual property.

  • Workshop 1 - Intro to Business Structures: led by the CEAD, the session will cover legal business structures and how that impacts your practice.
  • Workshop 2 - Tax Considerations for Small Businesses: led by Brian Borts, the session will cover New developments for 2019 taxes, HST - Tips and Traps, RRSP’s vs TFSA’s, Deductibility of Business Expenses, CRA Audits/Review Initiatives.
  • Workshop 3 - Contracting Basics 101: led by Paul Sanderson, the session will cover the importance of contracts, components to include, considerations, and what to do if clients breach the contract.
  • Workshop 4 - Intellectual Property: led by Macy Siu and the CEAD, this interactive session will cover common questions and key challenges.
