Coffee Chats w/ Hazel Meyer

blue and white graphic with black line in middle.

Coffee Chats is a series of virtual casual gatherings with the CEAD team with industry guests. Hosted virtually in small intimate groups, these gatherings will provide a space for group conversations with practitioners who are interested in supporting OCAD U students and grads to offer mentorship, and share their professional insights and journey, while collectively creating an online community.

Hazel Meyer is an artist who works with installation, performance, and text to investigate the relationships between sexuality, feminism, and material culture. Her work recovers the queer aesthetics, politics, and bodies often effaced within histories of infrastructure, athletics and illness. Drawing on archival research, she designs immersive installations that bring various troublemakers—lesbians-feminists, gender outlaws, leather-dykes—into a performative space that centres desire, queerness, and sweat.

Recent activations of her work have taken place at La Ferme du Buisson (FR) 2019, Glasgow International Art Biennial (SCT) 2018, Dunlop Art Gallery (SK) 2020, Progress Festival (CA) 2020, the Porn Film Festival Berlin (DE) 2019, and Contemporary Copenhagen (DK) 2021.

Hazel is a first-generation white settler, presently living and creating on the stolen and unceded territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations with their frequent collaborator and partner Cait McKinney and dog Regie.

Hazel is open to talking about:
Collaboration, queer feminist archival practices, living and working with illness, balancing creative work with admin tasks, intergenerational mentorship, living on grants and gigs.
