About the artist
Martin grew up beside the Haldimand Tract of land along the Grand River and experienced his earliest artistic inspiration from the land and forest. It’s imperative for me to acknowledge and recognize the Haudenosaunee, the Mississaugas of the Credit and many First Nations as the original stewards of the land. Indigenous Peoples have cared for the lands along the Grand River and built their cultures and communities on these lands since time immemorial. My childhood memories from the Tract and from going to school in the settler town of Cayu ga have contributed to shaping my solidarity with the Haudenosaunee and all First Nations of Turtle Island in their continuing pursuits of land back, self-determinism and justice.
“I hope my work begins to speak to the human condition, the environment, the histories of a place, current political issues, and equally to the imagination. The images express my thoughts and reflections on life and culture that I want to share. My photographs have been published in magazines such as The Walrus and Prefix Photo, exhibited in commercial galleries and public venues over the past 25 years, and are included in several art collections including the RBC Financial Group (NYC) and The Image Center (TMU).”
