OCAD University’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to announce a recruited placement in partnership with Art Metropole for the role of Programs, Publications & Shop Assistant. The Programs, Publications & Shop Assistant will join Art Metropole’s team to support activities at their 896 College Street space, at pop-up locations, and online. This is a fantastic opportunity for OCAD U recent graduates interested in building skills and knowledge in an artist-run-centre with a focus on artist’s publications and related programming. The role will be a combination of remote and in-person work.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Recent OCAD U grads (2022 or 2021) at the Undergraduate level or Master’s level
  • Knowledge of and experience with contemporary art practices or non-profit artist-run centres; familiarity with artist’s books and bookselling is an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and manage long and short-term projects
  • Demonstrated experience with project management and logistics coordination Mac OS proficiencies with Microsoft OfficeSuite, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator andInDesign
  • Customer service and retail experience would be considered an asset
  • Experience with art handling, archival material, or installing art exhibits is a considerable asset
  • Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Career Launcher opportunity

Art Metropole is a non-profit visual arts centre with a focus on contemporary art in formats predisposed to circulation and dissemination:artists’ books and art publications, video, audio, electronic media, and multiples. Art Metropole distributes works through its space at 896 College Street, pop-up and satellite locations, and online. Art Metropole produces exhibitions, talks, screenings, performances and other programming that feature and/or intersect with distributed art practices; and manages a public art collection and archive pertaining to these practices. www.artmetropole.com

The centre was founded in 1974 by the artist collective General Idea, as a division of Art-Official Inc. (1972). Art-Official’s mission is to facilitate and document collaboration and exchange of ideas between artists. The company had served as the non-profit business entity for General Idea’s File Magazine (1972–1989). Art Metropole was conceived as a related artist-run centre and collection agency devoted to the documentation, archiving and distribution of all the images.

Art Metropole is actively taking measures to ensure better representation of equity seeking culture workers throughout the organization, particularly in leadership and governance. The Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to announce the inaugural Contemporary Textile Studio Artist Residency Career Launcher for students or recent grads (2021, 2022). One (1) successful applicant will be awarded a 9 week self-directed residency with Contemporary Textile Studio Cooperative ($550 value) which grants them access to the co-op’s studio, facilities and equipment. Mentorship from one to two studio members will be provided throughout the residency. Additionally, the CEAD will provide the selected artist with $300 to support the cost of materials and supplies during their residency. This is an amazing opportunity to become part of a larger creative community and gain access to the excellent multidisciplinary facilities that Contemporary Textile Studio Co-operative has to offer.

The Contemporary Textile Studio Co-operative was started in 2006 by a group of textile artists wanting an affordable and properly equipped studio space, and a home for the promotion of textile arts and design in Toronto. The cooperative is located in a well-known cultural hub that is home to many galleries and artist-run centres. Their working studio is a prime 1200 square foot space on the first floor of the historic 401 Richmond Street West building where members and friends produce work, teach, learn, interact, and innovate with other designers, artists, student, and the community. Contemporary Textile Studio Co-operative relies on members’ and residents’ diverse backgrounds and perspectives to spark innovation and creativity. www.textilestudio.ca

Slate Asset Management is seeking proposals for a rotating public art exhibit that will animate the lobby of 2 St. Clair West in the Yonge St. + St. Clair Avenue West community. Slate welcomes Drawing & Painting students graduating in 2022, working in all mediums to submit proposals. Slate is seeking medium to large-scale pieces to be displayed on two walls in the lobby. Slate’s rotating art program will occur two times a year.

Slate will select two artists to exhibit their works on temporary loan in the lobby of 2 St. Clair West from August 2022 – January 2023 or February 2023 – July 2023 (6-month period). 

A minimum of 2 proposed pieces are expected, and the option exists for the presentation of multiple small pieces. The submission of existing finished works is encouraged. 

The selected artist will receive a $3,000 rental fee for the 6-month display of their works. A brief artist bio will be displayed alongside the works.

  • Open to OCAD U Drawing & Painting students graduating in 2022
  • Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Career Launcher opportunity

Early this spring, the OCAD U community was invited to submit nominations for the 2021-2022 Teaching Awards. We now present the shortlist results and invite all students, faculty, staff and alumni to provide additional support in order to help the Teaching Awards Committee identify this year’s awards recipients. You can submit a letter of support directly to the shortlisted candidates to include in their nomination support package by no later than Monday, June 6th, 2022.

Akin is a Toronto-based arts organization that provides creative studio space as well as arts-based programming. Akin’s studios provide a working environment that maintains a friendly and inspiring atmosphere where people can work on creative endeavours and creative entrepreneurial undertakings of all kinds. They build community through accessible and educational programming along with open studio events, gallery tours, exhibitions, as well as various other art projects. @akinprojects

Students are invited to apply for this opportunity and two successful applicants will be awarded $2,000 in credits to go towards a studio space at Akin’s shared workspaces in 2022-2023! In addition to the $2,000 studio credit, each recipient will receive $450 credit for use at Remote Gallery at Richmond and Portland. Remote Gallery provides the opportunity to exhibit work, host workshops / artist talks, or other activities relevant to early career growth. This is an amazing opportunity to become part of a larger creative community and gain access to the excellent multidisciplinary facilities that Akin Collective has to offer.

A successful applicant will be employed at Rouge National Urban Park; the first of its kind in Canada! The recipient will split their time between the office and/or from home and the park; processing images in the Rouge National Urban Park photo library, shooting imagery with drones and traditional cameras, doing design tasks for the Park’s Communications department, and organizing and archiving images and supporting the creation of staff resources.

OCAD University’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to announce a recruited placement in partnership with Secret Planet for the role of Studio Assistant. This is a great opportunity for artists and designers interested in screen printing, stationary, learning more about how to run a print studio, and working with local artists. Working closely with Secret Planet Print Shop, the Studio Assistant would gain hands on knowledge around the day-today workings of running and managing a print shop with their team.

In addition to working with Secret Planet, the recipient will be given a three-day rental credit ($300 value) and $150 materials credit from the CEAD. To be used near the end of summer 2022, the recipient can use the credit towards full access to Secret Planet’s equipment and print studio for an independent project. Secret Planet will be available to help advise, troubleshoot and guide their project.

Secret Planet is a screen-printing studio in East End Toronto that doubles as a stationery gift shop as well as a community space and zine library. QUALIFICATIONS

DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS: APRIL 18, 2022

The Call for Nominations for the 2021-2022 Teaching Awards is now open!  The awards celebrate teaching at the university and are presented annually in recognition of outstanding faculty, instructors and teaching assistants who employ equitable, inclusive and innovative teaching methods that provide meaningful learning experiences for students. All OCAD U students, staff and other faculty members are invited to nominate one of our many dedicated faculty members and teaching assistants for this year's awards. The deadline to submit your nomination is Monday, April 18th at 11:59pm.

 
Nomination Eligibility and Information
  • All faculty members and teaching assistants who taught in the Spring/Summer 2021, Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 terms are eligible to be nominated for this year’s awards.
  • Nominators are asked to submit a brief nomination letter along with the nomination form linked below.

A shortlist of nominees will be announced in mid-May and final results posted on the OCAD U website in the late summer. Award recipients will also be recognized publicly at the Fall 2022 Academic Year Welcome event.

The Price Award for Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty, which acknowledges sustained and ongoing contributions and leadership in teaching is presented in honour of JH and Mamie Price.

OCAD University’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers (CEAD) is excited to announce the inaugural Colour Code Publishing Career Launcher, an opportunity for one OCAD U student or one OCAD U student group to publish a risographic book project with Colour Code Publishing & Printing. 

This is a great opportunity for artists and designers interested in artists’ books, risograph printing, and learning the print and production process. The recipient(s) will receive the opportunity to publish a Risograph book project with Colour Code. Working closely with the team at Colour Code, the recipient or group will gain hands-on knowledge of editing and layout design for print as well as participating in the production process itself. The selected artist or group will receive copies of the publication for their own distribution as well as international distribution and wholesale opportunities with Colour Code’s shop. 

Established in 2012, Colour Code is an independent print studio and publishing platform based in Toronto. Colour Code specializes in high quality, artist friendly Risograph printing, as well as publication of small-run artist books, comics, posters and other printed matter.
