Mi’kmaq By Design is a series of artist talks coinciding with the exhibition Souvenir. Invited Mi’kmaq artists will speak about their creative practice and discuss the extent to which L’nu visual culture and history informs and/or inspires their work.

Biography 

Julia Rose Sutherland (She/They) Is a half Mi'kmaq (Metepenagiag Nation) and settler artist based out of Tkaronto (Toronto, Canada). She is an Assistant Professor at OCADU in (INVC) Indigenous Visual Culture and (MAAD) Material Art and Design in textiles. She has recently accepted a position on the Arts Advisory Committee for Toronto Bentway Project. 

She earned her MFA at the SUNY-University at Buffalo (2019) and BFA in Craft and New Media at the Alberta University of the Arts (2013). She has recently shown work at the Biennale d'art contemporain autochtone (BACA), The Visual Arts Centre of Clarington, Bemis Center of Contemporary Art, and the Mackenzie Art Gallery, K Art Gallery, WAAP Gallery, and 59 Rivoli Gallery in Paris, France.

Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor, OCAD University, is pleased to announce the public talk with Canadian design pioneer and newly-minted Member of the Order of Canada, Burton Kramer, has been rescheduled. Originally scheduled for February 6, but cancelled due to inclement weather, Mr. Kramer will be in conversation with Greg Durrell, director of the acclaimed 2018 documentary, Design Canada, and share insights into his experience in the nascent twentieth-century Canadian design industry and a career spanning five decades.

The President's Speaker Series lectures are generously supported in memory of Honey and Barry Sherman.

Please arrive early as seating is limited.
