The Indigenous Student Centre invites Indigenous students and graduates, along with their families, friends, and community to join us for the Indigenous Student Welcome and Celebration of Graduates!

The event will begin with opening words from the Indigenous community at OCAD U as we celebrate Indigenous graduates and welcome new students with guest singer Harvey Dreaver!

New students will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the Indigenous Student CentreIndigenous Visual Culture ProgramWapatah: Centre for Indigenous Visual Knowledge, the Indigenous Student Association, as well as Indigenous alumni and faculty!

Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA)

Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA) is one of Canada’s oldest not-for-profit charities working to advance the right to adequate housing. Founded in 1987 by a small group of Ontarians who were deeply concerned about discrimination in housing, CERA has worked tirelessly for over thirty years at the intersection of human rights and housing and is one of Canada’s leading NGOs working in the area of social and economic rights. CERA works to advance the right to adequate housing by: serving renters to help them stay housed; providing education and training about housing rightsand advancing rights-based housing policy.

In our session, we will answer questions and provide a brief summary of the most important things to know about your rights and responsibilities as a tenant and debunk some myths of renting in Ontario.

We run community events and activities, and are the main student group dedicated to bettering Indigenous students’ experiences at OCAD U; autonomous from the Indigenous Visual Culture Program, the Indigenous Student Centre, and the Student Union. Our goals year to year may change, but we remain grounded in our dedication to community and safer spaces for Indigenous students to learn, create and thrive.

OCAD SU offers a variety of free services to OCAD U students, including Advocacy Services and Lawyer:

Advocacy Services
Assisting students with interpersonal issues with professors.
Issues of discrimination and harassment.
Submitting petitions or appeals.
Information about student rights and advocacy for students to ensure proper accommodations are being met.

Lawyer Services
The Lawyer provides free legal advice to all OCAD U students on various matters such as, but not limited to, tenancy issues, small claims, contract disputes, immigration, criminal charges, employment issues, and family law. The lawyer can also prepare and review legal documents (such as affidavits and powers of attorney), notarize or commission documents, and make notarized true copies. If the Student Union Lawyer cannot assist you with your matter, they can usually refer you to a local lawyer for a reduced fee.
