Please join us for the virtual book launch event for Curating Lively Objects: Exhibitions Beyond Disciplines, on October 28th, 5pm to 7pm EDT, hosted by OCAD University’s Faculty of Arts and Science and School of Graduate Studies, in partnership with Onsite Gallery.

Co-edited by Caroline Seck Langill and Lizzie Muller, Curating Lively Objects explores the role of things as catalysts in imagining futures beyond disciplines for museums and exhibitions. Contributing writers describe how their curatorial collaborations with diverse objects, from rocks to robots, generate new ways of organizing and sharing knowledge.

Bringing together leading artists and curators from Australia and Canada, Curating Lively Objects addresses object liveliness from a range of entwined perspectives, including new materialism, decolonial thinking, Indigenous epistemologies, environmentalism, feminist critique and digital aesthetics. Foregrounding practice-based curatorial scholarship, the book focuses on rigorous reflexive accounts of how curating is done. It contributes to global topics in curatorial research, including time and memory beyond and before disciplinarity; the relationship between human and non-human across different ontologies; and the interaction between Indigenous knowledge and disciplinary expertise in interpreting museum collections.

Caroline Langill and Lizzie Muller will be joined in conversation by Ryan Rice, Lisa Myers, Randy Lee Cutler, Tess Allas, Lucas Ihlein, and Sarah Cook.

OCAD U Faculty of Arts & Science Speaker Series Presents Dr. Charmaine A. Nelson

“Black Body Politics and Self-Care: Slave Dress as Resistance in Caribbean and Canadian Slavery”

Thursday, April 29, 2021
12:00PM – 1:30PM EST

This lecture pursues a comparative exploration of slave dress, cultural preservation, and self-determination in Canada and British Caribbean islands like Jamaica and St. Vincent. Recuperating the histories of three enslaved black women-- Dutchess, Florimell, and Cash-- and one enslaved black man, Andrew, it explores how they acquired the means and materials to adorn, protect, and beautify their bodies amidst endemic material deprivation, cultural prohibitions, economic disenfranchisement and pervasive physical violence. Drawing on Rebecca Earle’s concept of “clothing acts,” the lecture examines genre studies, portraiture and fugitive slave advertisements to explore the spaces between the imposition of cloth rations in tropical planation regimes like Jamaica, the use of European second-hand clothing in Canada and the preservation of African cultural dress practices like headwrapping across the Americas.

Charmaine A. Nelson is a Professor of Art History and a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Transatlantic Black Diasporic Art and Community Engagement at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University in Halifax, where she is also the founding director of the first institute focused on the study of Canadian Slavery. Nelson has made ground-breaking contributions to the fields of the Visual Culture of Slavery, Race and Representation, and Black Canadian Studies.

Interlocutor:
Camille Isaacs, Associate Professor, English, Faculty of Arts & Science

The virtual art therapy group is designed with OCAD U students in mind. This group provides students with a space for self-expression, exploration, connection, and stress reduction in a non-judgmental environment. This group will introduce students to therapeutic and visual art techniques that can work together to better understand and navigate the feelings of stress to better manage the effect of those feelings.

The goals of the group revolve around creating art for yourself, relaxing in the art making process, gaining awareness of the feelings of stress, and creating positive coping skills that are unique to your experiences. The group has been designed to facilitate various visual art techniques with affordable and accessible art supplies.

The first group is on:

February 10th at 1:30pm to 3:30pm

The group will continue every Wednesday at the same time throughout the semester. Students can join at any point throughout the semester.
