SURVEY: MENTOR PROGRAM TRAINING 2017

 

INTRODUCTION:
Thank you for agreeing to take part in this important survey, seeking input regarding program training from Peer Mentors in OCAD U Campus Life’s Student Mentor Program. Today we will be gaining your thoughts and opinions in order to improve training for participants in future.

This survey should only take 4-8 minutes to complete. Be assured that all answers you provide will be kept in the strictest confidentiality.

SURVEY GOAL:
To determine whether all elements of current program training are valuable tools for the participants or if elements are missing, in order to enhance their skills as students AND Peer Mentors.

TRAINING 2017:
Reflecting back to April 2017, you were provided with two days of Mentor Program Principles, training and support, designed to provide you with an understanding of your role as a Peer Mentor and support you as a student with a variety of other interactive, networking and learning opportunities:

DAY 01

  • We discussed the purpose of the program and role of the Peer Mentor and Student Mentees and talked about how to recognize your success in that role.
  • Staff from First Generation Programs/Writing & Learning Centre engaged you with some discussion and tips on time management.
  • After lunch, you spent the afternoon with Andy Thibodeau from IMPACT Presentations, who led you through a series of interactive activities and discussions about building the trust you need to lead others, effective facilitation as student leaders, reliability and the The Three R's. 

DAY 02

Workshops highlighted knowledge on how to be effective Peer Mentors in OCAD U’s diverse community, identify barriers to inclusive engagement, gain a basic understanding of mental health and more:

  • Workshop, Anu Radha Verma: Anti-oppression, Diversity, Gender Identity & Inclusion
  • Workshop, Health & Wellness Centre: Supporting Students in Distress
  • Peer-led discussion: how to listen and communicate and recognize your own strengths and needs
  • Workshop, ODESI: Accessibility, Diversity, Equity and Sustainability Initiatives at OCAD U
  • Workshop, Student Advising: Academic planning and registration tips/using myOCADU effectively
