What are Faculty of Design Expansion Studios?
(For students admitted in the 2016/2017 academic year, or earlier)
Expansion studios allow students to pursue breadth and depth of knowledge in all Design major/programs. Beginning in third year, students may take courses that expand their knowledge into other major/program areas, or choose to take courses in one focused study area. The number of expansion studios required for each Design major/program varies.
Generally, expansion studios begin with the course code GDES (General Design) and are available at the 3000 or 4000 level. For students admitted in the 2015/2016 academic year or earlier, Program Guides may have recommended expansion studios. However, students may request approval from their Program Chair prior to the start of classes to substitute a maximum of 1.0 credits of relevant out-of-program courses as expansion studios.
(For students admitted in the 2017/2018 academic year or later)
Beginning in third year, students in any Design major/program can take electives from any undergraduate subject area (studio or liberal studies). Electives are available at the 1000, 2000, 3000 or 4000 level. The number of electives required for each major/program varies.
