FAQ

Yes. The Office of the Registrar has reached out via email to all tax eligible students to provide their SIN. Effective the 2019 tax year, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will require all designated educational institutions in Canada to file T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificates with the CRA and to make them available to students by February 28, 2023. To prepare your T2202 form for the tax year, OCAD U requires your Social Insurance Number (SIN). Subsection 237(1) of the Income Tax Act requires that you provide your SIN, upon request, to the preparer of the tax information slip. More information on this requirement can be found on the CRA website here. In order to meet this federal requirement, OCAD U will be requesting your SIN number in early 2023. The SIN will be stored securely and used for federally approved purposes. To provide your SIN and consent to use, follow the steps below: Log in to https://my.ocadu.ca/ Go to My OCADU Records (Self-Service) Click on your User ID on the top right; Update your SIN information under SIN Collection

Students who are non-residents of Canada are not required to provide a SIN. The Canada Revenue Agency’s definition of a non-resident for tax purposes can be found at: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/individuals-leaving-entering-canada-non-residents/non-residents-canada.html

Information on how to apply for a SIN can be found on the Government of Canada's Employment and Social Development website. The website will provide you with details on eligibility and the documentation you will need in order to apply for a SIN. https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin.html There is no fee to apply for a SIN. The easiest and fastest way to do this is to visit a Service Canada office.

One of the easiest ways to access your SIN is to consult your most recent Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency. If this is not available, you can request a confirmation of SIN from Service Canada. The Government of Canada's Employment and Social Development website will provide you with details on what documentation you will need to request a confirmation. https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin.html

You can print your T2202 and/or T4A from myOCADU. T2202 (formerly T2202A) forms are prepared for all students who have paid more than $100 in eligible fees for courses beginning and ending in a particular calendar year. Certain administrative and ancillary fees are not eligible for tax deduction. T4A forms are prepared for all students who have received more than $500 in scholarship, bursary or award in a calendar year.

No, the T2202 and/or T4A are no longer mailed out to students. These are available online through myOCADU self service. Please view, print, or download it from there.

Students are not required to submit a printed copy of the T2202 and/or T4A form(s) with their tax return, even if the T2202 credits are transferred to a parent. A printed copy is only required when requested by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) as part of a formal audit.

The total amount of tuition fees paid may not necessarily correspond to your T2202 because not all tuition and related fees are tax deductible. Certain administrative and ancillary fees are not eligible for tax deduction.

Fees that are not eligible include: Acad Equip/New Technology, Access Copyright, Health Promotion Counsel, Career Services, Learning Resource, Health and Wellness Centre, Centre for Emerging Artists and Designers, Writing Learning Centre, Student Buildings, Health/Dental Plan, all Student Union fees, program and ancillary fees, materials, goods of lasting value that you keep (such as a computer, materials or tools), and certain other administrative fees.

The T2202 is based on the tax year (January to December) and not the school year. The T2202 will include winter courses from the previous school year, summer courses, and the current year’s fall courses.

OCAD University is required to make the T2202 available to the student directly. Students must use the T2202 on their own return until the Federal Tax payable is reduced to zero. At this point the student may transfer the balance of the credit to their parent using the information on the T2202 related to the transferring of the unused credit as per the Income Tax Act.

You can use your tax receipt(s) even if the address is incorrect. Remember that it is not necessary for students to submit the T2202 form with the tax return, but they must produce it if requested by Revenue Canada. We strongly suggest that you keep your address updated on myOCADU.

If you feel that the information on your tax receipts is incorrect, please review all the FAQ's to ensure that you understand the period they are issued for and the amounts that are included and excluded. If after reviewing this information you feel that your receipt(s) are incorrect, please email the Senior Student Accounts Clerk at studentaccounts@ocadu.ca.

As per the Income Tax Act, students may not combine receipts from different institutions to meet the minimum eligible fee.

US institutions provide their students with a Form 1098-T verifying the tuition and other required information; however, the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) has not developed a form for foreign institutions.

If you are filing taxes in the US, you can consult with the IRS or their websites for further information about your eligibility to claim tax credits to claim tuition, fees and course materials billed by OCAD University. Eligible tuition and fees, in accordance with the guidelines of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), is found on the T2202 form, along with other expenses. As previously communicated, your T2202 is available to be downloaded from Self-Service.
