OCAD University’s Centre for Learning & Teaching (CLT) has launched new resources to support faculty and students in navigating the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in art and design education.

“As AI increasingly shapes learning, work and creative practice, it is essential that students have opportunities to explore its possibilities and limitations in informed and meaningful ways,” explains Susan Ferguson, director, Teaching and Learning. “By supporting both learners and educators, these resources help foster the critical inquiry, experimentation and creative development that define art and design education.

The new resources, available through the CLT Resource Hub on an internal-facing website, are designed to support inquiry, reflection and dialogue, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Current students and faculty members can access the resources after signing in with their OCAD U credentials. The learning and teaching resources are tailored to OCAD U's art and design context, with dedicated supports for both students and faculty/TAs:

**NEW RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS**
Six new resources are available for students, including the student-facing module, Academic Integrity Foundation Canvas Module. This module is designed to help students develop foundational knowledge of academic integrity in an art and design context, including around the intersection of academic integrity and AI use.

A companion resource, Academic Integrity: Identifying and Practising Acceptable Use, provides a template framework students can apply when determining the acceptable use of AI in their coursework, such as writing an assignment.

A five-part resource, AI and The Writing Process – Let’s Get Critical! supports students in making intentional decisions about using AI throughout the writing process, from brainstorming to researching to outlining, drafting and editing.

The Active Reading with AI template guides students through course readings using reflection, questioning and optional AI prompts to support critical thinking.

Students can also consult FAQ: AI and academic integrity, which addresses frequently asked questions and supports a critical understanding of AI and academic integrity in coursework, as well as a video on citing visual sources.

**NEW RESOURCES FOR FACULTY**
Four new resources have been developed for faculty and teaching assistants, including the AI + Studio Teaching and Learning Community of Practice. This community of practice brings together faculty members, studio technicians and other academic support staff to explore how AI is shifting studio-based pedagogy, creative practice and students’ learning experiences.

The group meets monthly throughout the academic year to examine how process, material engagement, authorship and experimentation are evolving in studio learning environments.

“AI is raising new questions about teaching, learning and creative practice that really do benefit from collective exploration. The community of practice creates space for educators to share experiences, explore emerging practices and collectively shape approaches that reflect the values of art and design education,” says Ferguson.

Decisions about whether, when and how AI may be used in a learning environment are most effective when they are grounded in learning outcomes, pedagogical values, accessibility considerations and disciplinary contexts, rather than driven by the capabilities or limitations of any particular AI tool.

Recognizing that these decisions are influenced by multiple factors and that appropriate approaches will differ across contexts, the CLT has created the guide, AI Course Design: Four Lenses for Reflective Decision-Making.

This guide is designed to support instructors in reflecting on the key considerations in making intentional decisions about how AI shows up in their course. The resource is organized around four “lenses” that can help instructors evaluate the use or non-use of AI throughout the course. These lenses are not intended to function as a checklist or produce a single correct answer. Instead, they offer diverse perspectives to inform decision-making.

The rise of AI is also prompting educators to re-examine assumptions about teaching, learning and how they assess learning, including assignments, projects, critiques, papers, portfolios and tests.

To support instructors, the CLT has created the resource, Assessment Redesign: Centering Student Learning and Meaning-Making in the Rise of AI. Rather than focusing primarily on AI detection or attempts to eliminate AI use, this resource invites educators to centre students and their learning, thinking and meaning-making. It also offers a process for revisiting and refining existing assessments while maintaining a focus on learning outcomes and meaningful student engagement.

As generative artificial intelligence (GAI) becomes increasingly incorporated into education, both educators and students are exploring ways to adapt. While GAI has the capability to enhance learning and engagement, it also presents challenges related to misuse and academic integrity. In parallel to the development of GAI, detection tools and platforms have been marketed widely across the education sector. How effective are they, and what risks do they pose?

The CLT’s new guide, Generative AI Detection Software, provides an overview of AI detection tools and how they work, including their accuracy limitations, privacy implications and intellectual property considerations.

**ADDITIONAL RESOURCES**
