Linda Carreiro’s research into movement and reading has been included in the The Body, the Dance and the Text: Essays on Performance and the Margins of History, edited by Brynn Shiovitz (McFarland Publishing, 2019). The book explores “the many ways in which writing relates to corporeality and how the two work together to create, resist and mark the body of the ‘Other’.” Carreiro’s piece ‘Shadow Boxed’ graces the book’s cover (photographed by aaron moore), with a prolonged statement of research ‘Choreogrammatics’, included as one of the written pieces. Building upon the linguistic modes of syntagmatic and paradigmatic cognition, Carreiro’s term ‘choreogrammatics’ proposes to open understandings of words through the act of moving while reading, creating multiple ‘subtexts’ that allow for diverse interpretations to occur.
