Interim Report from the GradEx 105 Task Force

The GradEx 105 Task Force was established with a mandate to explore and assess alternative options for showcasing the work of the 2020 OCAD University graduating class, following its cancellation due to COVID-19.

GradEx is one of the cornerstones of our University’s identity and a wonderful celebration of the creative talent of our graduates. The Task Force recognizes how the cancellation of this year’s event, due to the pandemic, has had a wide ranging impact on our graduating students and the completion of their projects.

In consultation with the Chairs and Graduate Program Directors, the Task Force recognizes that some OCAD U programs have already developed successful web-based platforms to feature work of their graduates, as exemplified by Illustration, Industrial Design, Advertising and Digital Futures programs.

Guided by the input from its members, the Task Force has developed a survey to seek input from all graduating students. Spring 2020 graduates are being asked to provide feedback on their creative work and the interest in potential opportunities for showcasing their work in lieu of a GradEx 105 event.

In concert with this effort, the Task Force has been engaging this week in conversation with lead faculty members. Drawing on these findings and consideration of the public health guidelines, as well as an assessment of resource implications, the Task Force is committed to identifying potential opportunities for presenting the work of OCAD U’s graduating class in the fall of 2020.

The Task Force is expected to make a recommendation to the VP, Academic and Provost later this month.
