POST-MASTER DESIGN OF RURAL WORLDS
A programme outside the walls of the École des Arts Décoratifs - in Nontron, Dordogne, France.
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS 2021-2022
The Design of Rural Worlds programme is a delocalised programme of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Nontron, Dordogne, dedicated to the development of rural areas through design and operating on the principle of responding to problems in close collaboration with local actors.
The course can accommodate 6 to 8 students. It is organised around three immersive study projects from local authorities, institutions, companies, associations or individuals, enabling students to confront real issues. The commissions will be on priority subjects for the territory but likely to concern rurality in general.
For the first three commissions, one will come from the CCPN (Communauté de Communes du Périgord Nontronnais); another, from a public institution or an economic actor; the third will involve actors from the Social and Solidarity Economy and the crafts.
A presentation will be organised at the end of the year, in front of a jury including the sponsors, the director of Ensad and the programme referents. The Pôle expérimental des métiers d'art will play a coordinating role on site and will host the presentations. Collaborations could also be imagined with the Design and Arts and Crafts residence.
The programme supports the development of rural areas through design. The study and incubation project takes place over an academic year, from September to June, and is built as a time to work on priority subjects for the territory.
The programme functions as a residency, a laboratory, a design office and an incubator:
It is like a residence in that it offers accommodation, a collective workshop and an environment conducive to research and project development. The selected candidates stay on site and have access, according to their needs, to the infrastructures and technical platforms of several partner institutions. As a laboratory in that it is oriented towards experimentation and social innovation.
As a design office insofar as it studies the development of full-scale projects in response to local problems or in partnership with local structures (associations, educational establishments, etc.). As an incubator insofar as it allows professional projects to be tested and consolidated.
The programme also aims to raise awareness of design practices among rural actors.
A designer and teacher at Ensad, Florence Doléac, will be in charge of supervision, artistic and scientific support and invited artists and theoreticians (geographer, sociologist, anthropologist specialising in rural worlds, etc.). A grant of €7,000 is awarded to each participant.
