Seeing OCAD University
Highlights of the Joyce and Paul Chapnick Collection
At Onsite [at] OCAD University October 29 to December 4, 2011
For more than thirty years, Joyce and Paul Chapnick have supported a wide spectrum of artists from the OCAD University community. Along the way, they have compiled a remarkable collection featuring numerous key past and present OCAD University faculty and students. The Chapnicks’ outstanding compilation includes John Scott, Eldon Garnett, Ken Danby, Rudolf Bikkers, Michele White, Diane Pugen, Graham Coughtry, Richard Robertson, John Newman, Colette Whiten, Suzy Lake, Irene Healey, William McElcheran, and many more.
Seeing OCAD University, curated by Lisa Deanne Smith and Charles Reeve, honours this exceptional legacy of support for OCAD University’s community with a celebration timed to coincide with another landmark: OCAD University’s 135th anniversary.
To add to this exhibition’s historical interest, Seeing OCAD University will include many of the photographic portraits that Paul Chapnick has taken over the years of the artists in the Chapnicks’ collection.
“The Chapnicks are visionary collectors!” said Lisa Deanne Smith, assistant curator at Onsite [at] OCAD University. “The artworks range widely in media, era and style, so their collection truly reflects the innovation that characterizes OCAD University.”
“Dr. Paul and Joyce Chapnick have been important philanthropists and arts patrons for many years, and OCAD University has been a significant beneficiary of that support” added Charles Reeve, curator at Onsite [at] OCAD University. “We are delighted to recognize their support for our part of that community with an exhibition coinciding with a key moment in our University’s history.”
A reception will be held on the evening of Saturday, October 29 to celebrate the opening of this remarkable slice of OCAD U's history, and to mark the university's 135th anniversary, which occurs on Sunday, October 30.
All events are free and open to the public.
