OCAD University’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to partner with Holt Renfrew to create an exclusive call-for-submissions from members of the OCAD U community. 

This collaborative venture aims to celebrate the kaleidoscope of artistic diversity thriving within OCAD U, offering a unique platform for local creatives to leave an indelible mark on the Holt Renfrew retail space. “Self Expression” is not just a tagline; it’s an ethos that defines this collaboration. A project budget up to a maximum of $25,000 (including artwork development, production and installation) will be awarded to an artist or collective to realize a temporary mural on the 3rd floor balcony hoarding wall of Holt Renfrew, 50 Bloor St. location. The recipient will be selected on the basis of a short project proposal, the strength of their portfolio of existing work, and other professional skills.

BUDGET

With a total maximum budget of up to $25,000 inclusive of artist fee, artwork, materials, production, and installation.

If the artist chooses to proceed with a digital print on vinyl this budget includes a designated approximate cost of $10,000 (of the $25K fee noted above) for installation and production. Artist fee allocations will be determined on a per-submission basis, ensuring fair distribution based on individual designs.

 

PROJECT TIMELINE

March 17: Submission deadline

March 29: Artist selection and notification

April - June: Concept development and production

July 2024: Live date

The artwork will be on display approx. 4-5 months (mid-July until late-November TBC)

 

DETAILS

Work will be applied to a vertical drywall surface (temporary interior construction hoarding wall) that measures approximately 30’ wide x 10’ tall in a high traffic area of the retail store. Artist has the choice to print the work digitally on vinyl or paint directly to the wall in-situ.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY 

Current OCAD U students who will be graduating in June 2024 

Recent OCAD U alumni from 2020 - 2023 

Experience in producing art installations and working within a set budget 

Must be able to create new, original work within the project timeline outlined above 

Previous experience with art commissions is an asset 

 

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A brief descriptive project proposal that contextualizes your approach to the mural within the context of your artistic practice (200 words max) 

5 - 10 sample support images of past artwork, in a single PDF 

A corresponding list for the support images including: artist name, title, year, medium, size details, in one PDF (in the same PDF as artwork images) 


 

SUBMISSION CONSIDERATIONS 

• The artwork can be created individually or in collaboration (one commission for the overall project) 

• Guidelines will be provided to those selected, outlining the boundaries of the project while fostering an environment that encourages innovation and positive change. 


 

MARKETING SUPPORT 

The process of realizing of this project may be shared through both Holt Renfrew and OCAD U marketing channels.
