Book Launch: COmmunicating Knowledge VIsually

In their new book, Communicating Knowledge Visually: Will Burtin’s Scientific Approach to Information Design, R. Roger Remington and Sheila Pontis, Ph.D., reveal the life, work, and mindset of Will Burtin. Taking a deep dive into nine of his most important projects, the authors show how his design strategies helped explain everything from the human cell to military equipment to the workings of the brain. In an era when science and our understanding of the world is more complex than ever, Burtin’s mindset and process is a timely framework for designers challenged with making complex concepts accessible and presenting sophisticated ideas to a broad audience without sacrificing nuance or depth.

Join us for a presentation by Remington and Pontis, followed by an interview with Isabel Meirelles and Q&A with the audience.

R. Roger Remington is the Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design Emeritus and former Director of the Vignelli Center for Design Studies at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, New York. As a teacher/scholar his critical interests are in graphic design history, research, and writing. His deep commitment to design history and preservation has led him to bring the archives of designers of the American Modernist generation to RIT and, more recently, in 2010, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Vignelli Center for Design Studies, which houses the career archive of Massimo and Lella Vignelli, among other notable designers. He has written four books on designers and design history.

Sheila Pontis, PhD is an information design researcher, educator and practitioner working at the intersection of information design, cognitive science, and field research.
