Although coexisting is the precedent of the human experience, it is not enough to form the basis of human connection. Each person perceives any given moment in a unique and different way. As such, the capacity to understand each other through shared experiences is not always certain, and the intimacy borne from communal loss, illness, or pandemic can still leave us feeling isolated and separate. Those pivotal characteristics of life which remind us that we are, in essence, separate beings are those same ties that bind us together: loss, identity, relationships, and uncertainty. The artists Briar TS, Moraa Stump, Aysia Tse, Wang Zi, Brigitte Sampogna, and Justin Mezzapelli bring together photography, video, sculpture, and performance to dive into those spaces between people, where shared life experiences can be as alienating as they are bonding. Alone Together examines the sites within which people feel disconnected from culture, from others, and even from themselves, bringing these indeterminate and ever-changing realms to the fore to reinforce the belief that, even if it sometimes feels like it, no one is ever truly alone.
