Digital Painting and Expanded Animation (Drawing & Painting)

Digital Painting and Expanded Animation is a specialization of both the Integrated Media and Drawing & Painting Programs. For this Drawing & Painting specialization, you’ll focus on digital painting. This is an art form that uses traditional painting techniques but on a computer or tablet. The Integrated Media specialization focuses on animation.

MORE ABOUT THE DIGITAL PAINTING AND EXPANDED ANIMATION (DRAWING AND PAINTING) PROGRAM

In this program you’ll take the core Drawing & Painting classes but also experiment with animation through 3Dand 2D modeling, texturing and rendering and stop-motion. Beyond the technical skills, you’ll also learn to create your own ideas and artistic voice. You’ll start in first year with Drawing & Painting and art classes and then focus on digital painting in later years.

To apply to this program, you should choose Drawing & Painting and select Digital Painting and Expanded Animation as your subject of major.

FIRST YEAR

In first year, in addition to an art class of your choosing, you’ll take:

SECOND YEAR

In second year, you will take Painting Studio, Animation Fundamentals, History of Modern Art, Contemporary Issues and Integrated Media classes based on your interest, including:

  • Printing and Digital Imaging
  • Compositing and Digital Animation
  • Animation: Stop-Motion
  • 3D Modeling and Animation
  • Intermediate Animation Studio
THIRD YEAR

Third year will feature Advanced Animation Studio, Animation: Critical Perspectives, Pixel Pusher and Integrated Media courses based on your interest, including:

  • Paint and Digital: Collaboration
  • Paint and Digital: Production
  • Advanced Compositing
  • Character Design and Animation
  • Sound Design
FOURTH YEAR

In your fourth year, you will focus on your year-long thesis project. You’ll also take courses based on your interest such as Professional Practice. At the end of the year, you’ll showcase your work at GradEx ̶ OCAD U’s Graduate Exhibition, the biggest free art and design exhibition in Toronto with more than 40,000 visitors.
