Digital Futures

OCAD University’s Digital Futures program is more than just coding – you will learn the skills for the most in-demand jobs that blend technical ability, art and design. Instead of just building a game or app, you will learn how to design it too.

More About the Digital Futures Program

This program will give you core digital skills and encourage to work on things that interest you, often focusing on team and group work. You will learn:

  • Coding
  • Game development and design
  • App development and design
  • Wearable technology
  • Data visualization
  • Music technology
  • Smart materials

At the end of this four-year program, you will earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  • For Ontario high school students, a minimum overall average of 70%
  • Portfolio (samples of your work and a visual representation of who you are)
  • Statement of Intent
  • Official transcripts

Some students pursue graduate studies in art, craft, design , ceramics, fashion, jewellery, textiles and museum studies.

WHAT YOU’LL DO IN THE PROGRAM

FIRST YEAR

In first year, you’ll take intro courses in Digital Futures and get a good base in art and design. Classes include:

  • Computer coding
  • Art and design history
  • Physical computing
  • Game design
  • Drawing
  • Art and code
  • Time-based media
SECOND YEAR AND THIRD YEAR

In second year and third year, you will form teams and explore different themes in workshops. Each workshop runs for two or three semesters. You’ll also take classes to complement the workshops in:

  • Computer software and coding
  • Smart phone app development
  • Game design
  • Digital art
  • Social media trend forecasting
  • Computer science history
  • Digital business
  • Wearable computing
FOURTH YEAR

In fourth year, you will take classes in entrepreneurship and leadership in the digital economy. You’ll also work on your thesis project and showcase your work at OCAD U’s GradEx, the biggest free art and design exhibition in Toronto with over 40,000 visitors. You can do your thesis by yourself or in a group.
