Cross-Disciplinary Art: Life Studies

If you love both science and art, this program might be for you. This program uses scientific methods to teach you about anatomy and biology to become a better artist.

More About the Life Studies Program

In this program, you’ll experiment with many different mediums including:

  • Drawing and painting
  • Sculpture
  • Animation
  • Photography

You will take science, art and social science courses to better represent life through art.

At the end of this four-year program, you will earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Get more details about the program.

Before you focus on Integrated Media, your first year at OCAD University will be in our first year art program. You will have a ton of choice in taking different kind of classes to get a good base for future years. A few are mandatory, such as art history, colour and drawing, but the rest of your classes could include:

  • Sculpture concepts
  • Wearable art
  • Photography
  • Painting
  • Animation
  • Body and technology
  • Printmaking
  • Art and code

In second year, you will take Life Studies studio and can choose from studio art courses that interest you and science and social science courses such as:

  • Introduction to biology
  • Human form and function: anatomy
  • Anatomy: structure and movement
  • Life Study for sculpture
  • Nature, culture and environment
  • The culture of science

Third year will feature a focused Life Studies studio course. You can also choose studio art courses based on your interest. You’ll also choose from courses in art history, science and social science.


II your fourth year, you will focus on Life Studies studio courses and classes based on your interest in art, design, sciences and social sciences. You’ll showcase your work at GradEx ̶ OCAD U’s GradEx, the biggest free art and design exhibition in Toronto with more than 40,000 visitors.
