Info for Parents

Worried about sending your kid to art and design school? Don’t be!

We’ve heard all the myths about the employment options for our grads – they aren’t true.

OCAD University is Canada’s biggest and oldest art and design university and more than 94% of our grads are employed. They work in everything from city planning to marketing, IT, illustration and interior design. The skills they learn here are transferable to many different kinds of careers just like any other bachelor’s degree like history or political science.

Just like any other university, we provide a supportive and fun campus life experience. Our campus includes a medical centre, library, plenty of chill-out space, food court and opportunities for intramural sports and social events.

We’re located in downtown Toronto’s Entertainment District and next to Queen Street West, the Art Gallery of Ontario and beautiful Grange Park. With small class sizes and technical staff in all our shops and studios, our students are more than just a number.

OCAD U has more than 4,500 students and 17 undergraduate programs. Field placement and internship opportunities are available in almost every program.

The world needs the talent of your kids — they belong here! Come visit us and see for yourself how your child can develop their skills and learn how to get paid doing what they love.

Meet Tina Doyle

Tina Doyle, a real estate agent in Hamilton, is mother of OCAD U Advertising grad Matthew Doyle.

First thoughts about sending Matthew to OCAD U

I was excited and worried at the same time when Matthew said he wanted to apply and attend OCAD U. I was excited that he chose such a specialized learning environment that would open doors for his creativity. I was worried that being specialized means fewer options when he entered the workforce. Up to that point, I thought design was a hobby. But, he researched his options and interviewed several schools. OCAD U is the only university that had what he wanted and he pursued a Bachelor of Design (Advertising) degree.

My son’s experience at OCAD U

Gaining early entry, he propelled through his four years and I was so proud of the work I saw, the skills and the resources that the school offered. I attended GradEx, the exhibition for graduating students. The sheer talent of the students is mesmerizing. You can go from art in all forms to furniture design to green living concepts all in one school! It took me several hours to take it all in. And, you could also purchase their original designs in specialized shops scattered throughout the departments. What clarified and substantiated the reputation of this school to me, was to view the campaigns that the advertising students had to create for real clients like O'Henry and the Red Cross. Amazing to see that this school has the ability to attract top talent to create unique content for these brands.

What I would say to another parent about OCAD U

To any parent that has any hesitation about this school, I say it is the best decision you could make for your child. Their future is bright and colourful!

Monica Polley

Meet Monica Polley

Monica Polley, an Authorized Court Transcriptionist and Courtroom Clerk/Reporter in Brampton, is mother of OCAD U Drawing & Painting grad Brendon Polley.

First thoughts about sending Brendon to OCAD U

When Brendon was accepted into OCAD U, I was incredibly proud of him. OCAD U has a top-notch reputation. However, being a single mother, I remember thinking how much would this cost, what’s the cost of living accommodations in Toronto and how would he travel to and from school with artwork. I wasn't sure about a few things but I definitely knew OCAD U was where he wanted to be.

My son’s experience at OCAD U

My son's experience at OCAD U was wonderful. The staff at OCAD U were always helpful and very supportive. My son had full access to all the facilities at OCAD U including all the shops and top-of-the-line equipment regardless of the program he was in. He enjoyed a variety of classes which allowed him to learn many different skills. The environment was positive and always inspiring. While at OCAD U, my son grew as an individual, developed his skills, and is now studying to become a teacher.

What I would say to another parent about OCAD U

I would highly recommend OCAD U. The school and the staff are the best. It’s located in the hub of the art world in downtown Toronto beside the AGO and many other galleries.  Full-access to whatever the student needs. It's a place of creative learning, full of innovation and up-to-date technology. It doesn't get any better.
