  • Hoi Yi (Suki) Lai has won the 2018 Saul Bell Design Award for emerging Arts 22 Years or Younger!

    The award is given to designers under the age of 22 for a piece of finished wearable jewellery adornment fabricated by them. The Saul Bell Design Awards are given to recognize "distinction in jewellery design" internationally and are named for Saul Bell, founder of Rio Grande, one of the largest worldwide suppliers in the jewellery industry.

    Nine student-designed rugs have been woven and are now available at Weavers Art's flagship showroom 1400 Castlefield Avenue. The student designers are: Mariam Ben Belfadhel, Allie Gregory, Mudassir Mohammed, Domenic Sgamelluri and Hatley Walker. Prize-winners for the Surface Design 1 class rug design competition include Emma Enright (first place), Amanda Larsson (second place) and Derry Gunawan (third place)! Faculty facilitators were Lynne Heller, Ana Galindo and Chung-Im Kim. (May 2017)

    Eleven textile banners by students in Surface Design 1 were selected as winners by the public and purchased by The Link, a community centre in Sutton, Ontario for their permanent collection after a collaborative project. The winners were: Madeline Bonk, Brittney De Lattibeaudiere,  Elliot Pines, Ofra Hauferman, Jaclyn Martyn, Angela McIntosh, Nan Sun, and Xing Yu. Faculty developer and leader was Chung-Im Kim.     Alumni Shane Weaver (Ceramics, 2009) has won the  2016  Dalglish Family Foundation Venture Award. This award supports “entrepreneurship in craft and design.” (August 2016)

    Jewellery student Janice Ng has won “Best in Design – Student” for her “Resting Trees Brooch,” at 18 Karat’s Great White North: The 12th Annual Exhibition of Jewellery Inspired by and Made in Canada (2016)
  • Six OCADU graduates and students are among the finalists for the 2016 Vaccaro Family Scholarship: Vanessa Raquel Castellino, Jenica Fan, Maria Gabrieleva, Cherry Liang, Blessie Maturan and Janice Ng! Their pieces will be on display at the Canadian Jewellery Expo in Toronto and Edmonton, where attendees can vote for the winner. The Toronto CJE will take place from August 7 to 9. (July 2016)
  • Recent MAAD graduate Maria (Masha) Gabrieleva is a finalist in the 13th National Jewellery Student Competition at L.A. Pai Gallery in Ottawa! Her work will be on display in the gallery to August 3. (July 2016
  • Two recent MAAD graduates have won awards at the 2016 Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition! Kaley Bowers won the Best of Student Award, which includes a residency and exhibition at Artscape, and Vanessa Raquel Castellina received Honourable Mention. Congrats to both! (July 2016)

  • Material Art & Design Jewellery student Prisilla Hui won the 2015 Vaccaro Family Scholarship presented by Beverly Hills Jewellers and Canadian Jeweller Expos. The scholarship is open to students in Canadian jewellery design and metalsmithing programs and selected entries are displayed at the Canadian Jeweller Expos in Toronto and Edmonton.  Prisilla's work was voted as the winning entry from nine submissions from across the country. The winner receives $3000.00 and their accrediting institution receives $1000.00 towards their program. (March 2016)
  • Theresa Duong (graduated 2012) won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition this year for her Papier Stains Necklace (September 2015)
