INCOMING EXCHANGE PROGRAM
To study as an incoming exchange student at OCAD University, you must be nominated by your home institution.
You may participate in the program for a maximum of one term at OCAD U, either the fall or winter.
STEPS INVOLVED IN APPLYING FOR INCOMING EXCHANGE
1. Be nominated by your home institution.
To apply to OCAD U as an exchange student, you must be currently enrolled at an OCAD U exchange partner institution. Please contact the exchange office at your home institution for details. If your university is not listed as one of our partners, you will not be eligible to apply.
2. Application Process.
Once you have been nominated by your home institution, you will be invited to complete the online application through SlideRoom.
- You will need to create an account.
- Once an account has been created, you will need to complete the online Student Mobility/Exchange Program-Incoming Application Form.
3. Documents Required with Application.
- Letter of Intent (250-300 words)
- Most recent copy of official transcript
- Portfolio (8-10 pieces of your original work)
All documents must be submitted in English or an official English translation must be provided.
4. Application Deadlines.
April 1st - Fall Term (September to December)
October 1st - Winter Term (January to April)
Note: Academic term dates at OCAD University may not be the same as the academic terms at your home institution. Please refer to dates and deadlines for other important information.
5. Language Requirements.
The official language of instruction at OCAD U is English. If your first language is not English, or the official language of instruction in your home institution is not English, you may be required to demonstrate that you have sufficient ability to complete university-level courses in English.
6. Admission Decisions
Being nominated for the exchange program is not a guarantee of acceptance to OCAD U. Decisions are based on the quality of your application, the terms of the exchange agreement with your home institution, as well as the balance between incoming and outgoing students. We strongly recommend that you also consider other study abroad options in case we are not able to offer you a spot for exchange.
Admission decisions will be communicated by email in mid-June for the fall term, and mid-November for the winter term.
Information on how to select your courses will be sent after you have been accepted as an exchange student at OCAD U.
A full-time course load at OCAD U is 2.5 credits (five 0.5 credit courses) per term. All incoming exchange students must maintain full-time student status for the duration of their studies at OCAD U. Students must take a minimum of four 0.5 credit courses (2.0 credits) with no more than five 0.5 credit courses (2.5 credits) per term.
INCOMING EXCHANGE STUDENT FEES
As an exchange student, you pay tuition fees to your home institution. At OCAD U, exchange students are required to pay mandatory fees, including University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP), course materials and software (required for certain programs of study).
Note that UHIP provides international students with basic health coverage (hospital and medical services) during their exchange. It does not provide supplementary insurance. Students may wish to opt-in to the Health and Dental Plan offer at OCAD U.
Students must clear any outstanding accounts (fees, AV loans etc.) before any documents or transcript may be issued at OCAD U. Please visit Tuition & Fees on OCAD U website for important information on fee payment deadlines, payment methods, and late payment penalties.
OCAD U does not have an on-campus student residence. Students are responsible for finding their own housing for the period of their stay. Housing information is provided on the OCAD U website and ‘OCAD U Housing’ on Facebook. Students should plan ahead and explore all housing options at the time of their application. The International Student Services office will assist where possible.
IMMIGRATION AND EMPLOYMENT
Exchange students coming for one term (less than 6 months) are not required to have a Study Permit, however depending on your country of citizenship, you may be required to obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. Your letter of acceptance from OCAD University will be required for your visa application. Please consult with the Canadian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate nearest you.
Exchange students are not permitted to work on-campus or off-campus. Details can be found on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.
