YOUR OCAD U STUDENT HEALTH AND DENTAL PLAN
OCAD University offers a health, dental and travel insurance plan to students, provided by www.studentcare.ca. Students registered in at least 1.5 credits in the Fall semester for September-August coverage and at least 1.5 credits in the Winter semester for January-August coverage are automatically opted in to the plan. All students are able to make changes to their coverage during the first month of studies by opting in, opting out or adding dependents to the health and/or dental plans.

What is a Health and Dental Plan?
The Plan is a valuable service provided by OCAD U to provide its students with the extended health and dental coverage they need beyond provincial health care or basic health-care programs such as UHIP and guard.me.
Why do I need a Student Health and Dental Plan?
Unfortunately, a growing number of important health-care services are not covered by provincial health care or other providers of basic health care such as UHIP and guard.me. For many students, paying for these services can lead to financial hardship, while others cannot afford them at all. To help students pay for the health services they need, a student health and dental plan has been put in place. The OCAD U Student Health and Dental Plan has been uniquely designed for you by your Student Union and Health and Wellness Centre, with the support and guidance of student health insurance experts to provide a comprehensive package of health and dental benefits to fill the gaps left by provincial health care and other basic health care plans.
Why is it called a group plan?
The Plan is a collective approach to health care, which allows individual fees to be much lower than the cost of private coverage.
Individually purchased health insurance can easily cost over $900 per year per person. This plan was designed by students for students. Its low cost comes from the buying power of over 750,000 students from across the country. This makes it much less expensive than any private plan. Check around.
What does the Plan cover?
The Plan is a comprehensive package of health and dental benefits designed for you including:
- prescription drugs;
- health practitioners (e.g. chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, etc.);
- dental exams and cleanings;
- fillings and root canals;
- travel health coverage and more.

Full-time, fee-paying students who meet the following criteria are automatically included in the OCAD U Student Health and Dental Plan:
- undergraduate students who are enrolled in 1.5 credits or more in September or January;
- SFI graduate students who are enrolled in 1.5 credits or more in September or January; and
- graduate students who have declared full-time status.

To use the health benefits, you must also be covered by provincial health-care coverage (such as OHIP) or the equivalent (such as UHIP for international students). Certain exceptions exist. Please check your OCAD U student account to confirm if you have been charged the Plan fees.
How much does it cost?
The OCAD U Student Health and Dental Plan fee for full-year coverage (Sept. 1, 2016 - Aug. 31, 2017) for full-time students is $365.00. The breakdown is $190.00 for Health and $175.00 for Dental coverage. For many students, this cost is part of your student fees. What if I am already covered under another plan?
You might want to double-check. Some insurance plans will stop covering you completely if you’re a part-time student over 21 or a full-time student over the age of 25. Additionally, other plans may not cover vaccinations and/or travel insurance.
Most plans won’t cover all your health-care costs on their own, but you can combine your Health Plan with another plan for up to 100% coverage.

How do I opt out?
If you’re covered by another plan (i.e. parent or spouse’s employee benefit plan) and do not wish to combine plans and coverage, you may opt out during the Change-of Coverage period during your first semester of the academic year to receive reimbursement for the plan fees. Your reimbursement will be applied to your OCAD U Student Account. The Change-of-Coverage period for the Fall 2017 semester is from September 6 to October 6, 2016.
Visit www.studentcare.ca and follow the on-screen instructions for opting out. More information about this year’s OCAD U Student Health and Dental Plan Fees are also available on this website. It should only take a few minutes to complete your opt out; please remember to have proof of your alternative coverage available at the time of opting-out.
Please note that if it is your first time opting out of the Plan, you will have to provide proof of other equivalent health and dental coverage.
What is the Change-of-Coverage Period?
The Change-of-Coverage Period is the period at the beginning of the semester when you can either opt out of or enrol your spouse and/or dependents in the OCAD U Student Health and Dental Plan. If you start school in September, the Change-of-Coverage Period is from September 6 to October 6, 2017. The January Change-of-Coverage Period is only for new Winter Term students (students that were not registered as full-time students in the Fall Term) who choose to opt out or enrol their spouse/dependents for coverage.

Do I need to opt out of the Plan each semester?
No. If you opt out during the Change-of-Coverage period, it is in effect for the whole policy year, from September 1 through August 31 of the following year.
If I opt out of the Plan this year, will I need to opt out again next year?
Yes. Opt outs are valid for the current policy year, from September 1 through August 31 of the following year. If you return as an eligible student in the following Fall term, you’ll be automatically re-enrolled in the Plan. Should you wish to opt out again next year, you must renew your opt out directly through www.studentcare.ca during the Change-of-Coverage Period.
If I’m covered under the Plan, can I enrol my family?
Yes. The OCAD U Student Health and Dental Plan gives you the option to enrol your family (common law partner, spouse and/or dependants) by completing an enrolment process and by paying an additional fee, over and above your fee as a Plan member. For students registered in classes during the Fall semester enrolments must be completed within the Fall Change-of-Coverage Period and are for a full-year of coverage. Only students beginning studies in the Winter semester may enrol their spouse/dependants during the January Change-of-Coverage Period.

What are the Networks and how do they benefit me?
To offer students even more coverage and to help you get the treatment you need for less, the insurance provider has set up networks of health-care professionals. These providers offer an additional reduction over and above the amount covered by the OCAD U Student Health and Dental Plan.
Students can combine their coverage with the Network reductions up to a maximum of 100% coverage.

Do I have to see a Network practitioner in order to receive my OCAD U Student Health and Dental Plan coverage?
No. The Networks are available to help students further reduce the overall costs of services, in addition to the insured portion of coverage. Regardless of the health professional you choose you’re covered for the insured portion of the service.

How much control and privacy do I have over my plan?
The insurance provider, Studentcare, never gives information to a third party without your consent, giving you complete control over your private medical history and claims.
How do I use my benefits?
You can download a Pay-Direct Card at www.studentcare.ca or pick one up at the Health and Wellness Centre on the 6th Floor of 230 Richmond St. W. By presenting the Pay-Direct Card with your valid student ID, you can fill your prescriptions at most Canadian pharmacies and receive 90% off the price cost of prescriptions. The pharmacist will be able to process the claim immediately, so you won’t have to pay the full amount up front and wait to be reimbursed.
For vision and other health services, you will be responsible for payment when the service is rendered. You can then complete and sign an extended Health Claim Form, attach any necessary receipts and/or documents, and mail them to Desjardins Financial Security Life Assurance Company, C.P. 3950, Lévis, Quebec, G6V 8C6.
For dental claims, you must complete the claim form with your dentist. Some dental offices can do an electronic submission; in this case, you will only be required to pay for the uninsured portion of the service. Other dental offices will have you pay the full fee for all services and then file the claim for reimbursement.

Do I have to mail my claim form?
No. You can also submit claims online through the studentcare mobile app instead of mailing the claim form to save stamps and receive your reimbursement sooner! Download it for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
