As an international student in Ontario, you must participate in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). This plan provides basic health care benefits including hospital and doctor services.  The insurance is effective from September 1st each year until August 31st of the following year.

The cost for 12 months of coverage for a single student in 2011/2012 is $684.  Family coverage is also available.  The UHIP fee is added to your student fees account at the time you register and OCAD will enroll you in the plan.

You can get details on the plan by visiting the UHIP website.

UHIP Cards and Claim Forms

You should pick up your UHIP card in September from the International Student Services Office on Level 1 at 51 McCaul Street.  It is very important to carry this card with you at all times.

When you visit a clinic or hospital you must show your UHIP card.  Some hospitals and clinics will submit the request for payment directly to the insurance company and you will not need to pay for the medical services at the time of your visit.

If the hospital or clinic is not able to request payment directly from the insurance company, you will have to pay for the medical services at the time of your visit.  If you make a payment to a hospital or clinic, be sure to get a receipt from them.  You should then send the receipts and a claim form to the insurance company so that you can be reimbursed for your expenses.
