ADAPTIVE AND ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Adaptive technology is any technology that helps people overcome barriers posed by a disability all with the goal of increasing students independence and academic success. Through meeting with one of the CSD's adapitve Technologists you may be introduced or reaquainted with the following technology:
Screen readers
Kurzweil 3000 uses a combination of audio and visual feedback as well as built in reference tools that allow users to improve reading fluency and comprehension. In essence, it is capable of reading your text books to you while you follow along or, alternatively, you can export the file to an MP3 to use anywhere. It also assists with studying by allowing students to use a combination of bookmarks, voice notes, and coloured highlighters which can be easily extracted.

Increasing numbers of CSD students are using Kurzweil 3000 and to assist them in their studies we have begun producing course textbooks in alternative format (digitized so it is compatible with Kurzweil 3000). Because this is a labour intensive and time consuming process, we are asking for students' help. Please request materials in alternative format using the Alternative Format Request Form as soon as you register for your classes so that we can make sure you are ready to go when the semester begins.
