What is a Peer Mentor?
Peer Mentors are knowledgeable upper-year student volunteers who are matched with (up to) two “Student Mentees” (new/first-year students) and assist with their transition to OCAD U by encouraging community involvement and engagement with peers, faculty and staff. Peer Mentors provide encouragement, support, and guidance, and information regarding university procedures, student support services and extracurricular activities.
If you are looking for a positive student experience, become a Peer Mentor! Get involved and connected. Enhance your communication savvy. Strengthen self-confidence and interpersonal skills. Make new friends. Emerge as a student leader. The program runs June through November.
Mature and International Peer Mentors:
Are you an upper-year mature (25+) or international student interested in becoming a Peer Mentor? As a Mature Student Mentor or International Peer Mentor, you would be matched with new and first-year mature and international students coming to OCAD U in September who can benefit from your diverse and shared experiences.
As a Peer Mentor, you will:
- Participate in mandatory Program Training which includes an exciting new one-day Leadership Retreat! New and returning Peer Mentors MUST commit to both days: Monday, April 21, 2014 and Tuesday, April 22, 2014 (upon completion of classes and exams). Dates subject to change. Engaging and fun, training allows Peer Mentors to connect and bond while receiving important and motivational information as a group.
- Contribute and participate online as moderators (May to September) with other Peer Mentors (facebook groups, blogs, etc.).
- Represent the program and greet new students at Registration Assistance Days (RAD Days) in June/July, and O-DAYS! activities (September), as well as other OCAD U events where the presence of Peer Mentors is beneficial.
- Be matched with up to two Student Mentees (starting in June).
- Initiate contact, make introductions and clarify their preferred method of communication. Encourage Mentees to contact you with questions or concerns.
- Establish a monthly communication schedule and officially "check-in" with your Student Mentee(s) on a regular basis for the duration of the program.
- Check email regularly and kindly respond within 24 hours.
- Attend the annual "Mentor Program Meet 'n Greet & Ice Cream Social" during O-DAYS! (September), and invite your Student Mentee(s) to meet in person. Support other O-DAYS! activities.
- Peer Mentors are encouraged to plan and participate in other monthly activities for Student Mentees, September through to November.
- Submit monthly online Mentor Report forms (June through November).
- Respect your Student Mentee(s)' privacy, ensuring that contact information and personal conversations are kept confidential.
