ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Academic success can be greatly enhanced by engaging in a two-step process of self-discovery which ends with you setting clear expectations of yourself as a learner.
Step 1.
Ask yourself: "What are my learning strategies as an OCAD University student?"
Consider the following:
- Do you know why you might find some areas of learning more difficult than others?
- Do you have any personal learning goals around improving skills?
- Are you aware of all coursework and associated due dates?
- Are you prepared to practice new skills or techniques?
- Do you have a "network" with whom to discuss coursework?
- Do you know how to use feedback in order to improve?
In thinking about the answers to the above questions, it may be helpful to know your preferred learning style(s). These include visual, aural, reading/writing and kinaesthetic.
Take the VARK Questionnaire and then learn how to match a strategy to your style by visiting VARK Helpsheets.
Step 2.
Ask yourself: "Am I prepared to manage the student experience overall?"
Being successful as an undergraduate student at OCAD University requires that you take into consideration not only your coursework, but also how you approach the student experience.
Some of the common challenges students come up against include:
- Creativity and writing on demand
- Managing time effectively
- Setting achievable goals
- Presenting/communicating under pressure
- Finding the right kinds of support
If you can identify with any or all of the above, then please download our "Student Success @ OCAD U" PDF guide for a range of practical tips.
