First-generation Program

What does "first generation" mean?

First generation refers to students whose parents/guardians did not attend university or college. If your sibling(s) has/have attended a post-secondary institution, but your parents have not, you are still considered first generation.

The First-generation Program offers support for students who are the first in their family to attend university — but all students are welcome!

  • Workshops: Writing, time management, critique labs
  • Study group: Specifically geared for VISC 1001 and VISC 1002
  • Community-building events: Pumpkinpalooza, Unboxed: board-game nights, movie nights
  • Compass: A two-day orientation for first-year students
  • Yearly publication and exhibition: Print publication of art, design and writing of first-generation students
