Shops & Studios Safety Program

Standard operating procedures are re-evaluated on a regular basis. Safety requirements for specific equipment may change without notice. Please refer to Studio Technician (or designate) for the most current and up-to-date policies and procedures

Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs)

The university now has studio-specific SOPs for almost every type of equipment it has. Each SOP contains information on (a) personal protective equipment requirements, (b) pre-use visual inspection checklist, (c) safe operating procedures, (d) lockout/tagout procedures and (e) maintenance checklist.

Please note that the SOPs are a resource only. It is imperative that students receive a live demonstration or training from their studio technician or faculty before they operate any equipment on campus.

Chemical matrix

Each studio now has a chemical matrix that provides a safety summary for each chemical used, including (a) key composition of the chemical, (b) hazardous properties, (c) storage instructions, (d) recommended personal protective equipment, (e) requirement for use in a spray booth and (f) proper disposal recommendations.

Lockout/Tagout

Each machine will have a lockout/tagout procedure that can be applied when performing any maintenance or servicing highlighting the lockout points and type of lock required.
