Canadian permits and visas

IMPORTANT NEWS! Due to recent changes to the Canadian government's Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, the International Student Services office is not able to provide international students with advice on immigration applications (study permits, work permits, temporary resident visas) at this time. We can, however, help you find the information you need on the Citizenship & Immigration Canada website and refer you to other resources as necessary. We apologize for the inconvenience this change to the law may cause.

IMPORTANT NEWS! As of June 1, 2014, Citizenship & Immigration Canada will be implementing changes to the regulations for international students. Be sure to check its website for the latest updates.

Applying for an initial Study Permit

All international students require a valid Study Permit to register for courses at OCAD U. You should apply for your Study Permit as soon as you receive your official letter of acceptance from OCAD U. Processing times vary from country to country and it may take as long as 90 days for your application to be processed.  Please visit the Citizenship & Immigration Canada website for information on the application process and required documents.

Extending your Study Permit

It is very important to know when your current study permit is going to expire and to allow plenty of time to renew it.  You can apply for a Study Permit extension from within Canada through the Citizenship & Immigration Canada website.

Applying for a Temporary Resident Visa

Citizens of certain countries will also require a Temporary Resident Visa (entry visa) to come to Canada.  The Canadian visa office will process your Temporary Resident Visa application at the same time as your Study Permit application.

If your Temporary Resident Visa expires, it is possible to apply for a new visa from within Canada.  Please visit the Citizenship & Immigration Canada website for information on the application process and required documents.
